AceShowbiz - Hip-hop star Wyclef Jean has resigned as the head of his Haiti aid charity as he prepares to formally announce his campaign to run for president of his native country. The Fugees rapper is expected to officially declare his run for office on Thursday, August 5 after weeks of speculation. And he's fueled the reports by stepping down from the Yele Haiti organization he established in 2005 to benefit his beloved country, revealing the decision will be effective immediately.
Businessman Derek Q. Johnson has taken over as president of the charity. In a statement released on Thursday morning, Jean pledged to continue supporting Haiti as citizens continue to rebuild their lives following the devastating earthquake in January.
He said, "I am not stepping down in my commitment to Haiti. On the contrary, regardless of what path I take next, one thing is certain: my focus on helping Haiti turn a new corner will only grow stronger." Jean has traveled to the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, where he is reportedly set to file his election papers.
