AceShowbiz - Christopher Nolan’s latest film, The Odyssey, needs to earn $375 million at the global box office to recoup its combined production and marketing expenses. The epic, which cost $250 million to produce and carried $125 million in promotional costs, has set a high financial bar for success.
The movie generated $17.6 million in domestic preview ticket sales—a record for Thursday previews this year—surpassing the previous high set by Toy Story 5. International previews added another $21.3 million, bringing the worldwide preview total to $38.9 million. Analysts estimate that The Odyssey will pull in between $90 million and $100 million during its opening weekend. Should it surpass the $100 million mark, it would become the third film of 2026 to do so, following Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus and Zendaya as Athena, bringing Homer’s epic poem to life through Nolan’s distinctive vision. Shot entirely on IMAX 70mm film, the production spanned six months across diverse and challenging locations such as deserts, mountains, seas, Arctic regions, and a Sicilian island. This ambitious approach involved transporting heavy IMAX cameras through tough terrain, emphasizing practical effects and real-world settings over CGI. Universal Pictures greenlit the project following Nolan’s success with Oppenheimer, which grossed over $975 million worldwide.
Christopher Nolan also wrote the screenplay himself, embracing a complex narrative structure with stories within stories and layered flashbacks. Early critical response has been overwhelmingly positive, with The Odyssey achieving a 96% rating on the Tomatometer and a 97% score on the Popcornmeter, marking it as Nolan’s highest-rated movie to date.
The stakes for The Odyssey are significant, as its hefty budget demands strong box office performance to turn a profit. The film’s blend of technical ambition, star power, and critical acclaim positions it as a major cinematic event, but meeting the $375 million threshold will be crucial to justify its massive investment and continue Nolan’s track record of blockbuster success.
