AceShowbiz - Twista has admitted guilt on five counts of tax evasion, AllHipHop reports. The rapper could face up to five years behind bars as a result of the charges.
Fox32chicago also detailed that Carl Mitchell, better known as Twista, failed to pay more than $440,000 in income taxes dating back to 2011. Despite earning revenue from performances, album sales, streaming, and royalties between 2019 and 2023, he did not fulfill his tax obligations. Prosecutors noted that Mitchell was repeatedly warned by the IRS and his accountants about his growing tax debt. Instead of settling these dues, he arranged advances on future royalty payments through a third party, a move that prevented the IRS from seizing those funds. During this period, he continued to make costly purchases, including acquiring at least four luxury cars. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 22, with each count carrying a maximum penalty of one year in prison. An IRS special agent emphasized that many taxpayers meet their responsibilities honestly, while Mitchell disregarded multiple warnings to address his debts.
Twista is best known for his 2004 hit single "Slow Jamz" from the album Kamikaze, which earned him Grammy nominations in 2005 for both Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and Best Rap Solo Performance. He also received several award nods in 2004, including from the Source, Billboard, and Vibe Awards, highlighting his status as a prominent figure in hip-hop from Chicago.
This development marks a significant legal setback for Twista, whose financial troubles now overshadow his musical achievements. The potential prison sentence underscores the serious consequences artists face when failing to meet tax responsibilities, serving as a cautionary tale within the entertainment industry.
