AceShowbiz - Hasbro is teaming up with Amazon MGM Studios and Jonathan Nolan to develop a live-action reboot of the 1980s animated series Jem and The Holograms, Superherohype reports. This new series will reimagine the iconic show that originally aired for three seasons starting in 1985 before its cancellation.
The project will be executive produced by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, along with Gabriel Marano, according to Superherohype. Facebook also confirms that Kilter Films, the production company run by Joy and Nolan, is spearheading the series’ production. Hasbro Entertainment, the owner of the Jem and The Holograms intellectual property, is actively involved in bringing this revival to life, Deadline adds.
Amazon has been steadily expanding its original content lineup, particularly with female-driven and young adult-themed series. The company, known for producing notable shows like Fallout and Fourth Wing through Kilter Films, is positioning this reboot as part of its Prime Video offerings. The original animated series, created by Christy Marx, centered on Jerrica Benton and her alter ego Jem, the lead singer of a rock band, blending music videos with storytelling in a format inspired by MTV’s rise in the mid-1980s.
This reboot signals renewed confidence in the franchise after a 2015 live-action movie adaptation, directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Aubrey Peeples, failed to find commercial or critical success. With the combined creative forces of Nolan, Joy, Hasbro, and Amazon, the new series aims to introduce Jem and The Holograms to a fresh generation while tapping into the nostalgia of longtime fans. An official release date has not yet been announced.
