Elsbeth's showrunner explains why more Good Wife crossovers are unlikely, despite Marissa Gold's return, and how future cameos must serve the story.

AceShowbiz - Elsbeth offered fans a nostalgic connection to its predecessor earlier this year when the paths of Elsbeth Tascioni and Marissa Gold unexpectedly crossed. This reunion marked a rare moment where the show's Chicago roots touched its current New York setting. However, it appears future appearances from alumni of The Good Wife and The Good Fight might be limited.
The showrunner of Elsbeth, Jonathan Tolins, has explained that while the creative team is open to incorporating more characters from the "Good Wife" universe, such inclusions must fit naturally within the narrative of Elsbeth. So far, only Sarah Steele’s Marissa Gold has recurred, as her character’s transition into politics aligned well with the storyline.
Other returning actors like Christian Borle have appeared in new roles within the show, but integrating familiar faces as their original characters has proven complicated. This is partly because Elsbeth is set in New York and follows a procedural cop drama format, whereas the previous series took place in Chicago and focused on legal drama. This geographical and genre shift makes seamless crossover challenging.
Interestingly, several notable actors from the "Good Wife" and "Good Fight" franchises—including Nathan Lane and Hamish Linklater—have guest-starred on Elsbeth as entirely new characters, showcasing the show’s flexibility in casting familiar talent without direct crossover. However, bringing back major characters like Christine Baranski’s Diane Lockhart or Matt Czuchry’s Cary Agos as themselves would require significant budget resources, which the showrunner suggests are hard to justify given the show’s typical financial priorities.
In fact, the guest budget on Elsbeth is often reserved for casting actors in the role of the murderer, leaving little room for expensive returning stars unless their characters are central to a pivotal storyline. This practical constraint means fans may need to temper expectations for frequent appearances from original "Good Wife" leads on Elsbeth.
Elsbeth is slated to return to CBS this fall for its fourth season. While an exact premiere date has not been announced, viewers can expect new episodes to air on Thursdays at 9/8c as part of the network’s primetime lineup.
