AceShowbiz - Euphoria is officially returning for its highly anticipated third season, bringing back a mix of original cast members alongside fresh faces. Fans can expect to see familiar stars such as Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, and others, while newcomers including Toby Wallace, Anna Van Patten, and Rosalía join the ensemble.
The series, which first debuted in 2019, centers on the troubled high school student Rue, portrayed by Zendaya, as she navigates sobriety and personal struggles after rehab. The show quickly gained popularity, securing a renewal for a second season shortly after its premiere. However, fans endured a lengthy wait of nearly three years for the follow-up episodes due to various setbacks.
Originally slated for a 2025 release, the third season faced multiple delays. One significant factor was creator Sam Levinson's involvement in his other project, The Idol. Additionally, the dual impact of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild?American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes in late 2023 further postponed production and release schedules.
Tragedy struck the cast with the unexpected death of Angus Cloud in July 2023 at age 25 from an accidental overdose. His passing deeply affected the cast and crew, and the show is anticipated to address the fate of his character, Fezco, in a heartfelt manner. Eric Dane, who passed away at 53 due to ALS, had already filmed scenes for season 3, and his character Cal appears in the trailer released shortly after his death.
Levinson spoke candidly about the challenges in moving forward after losing such integral members of the cast. At the season 3 premiere in April 2026, he explained that the extended gap between seasons was not only due to external factors like the strikes and scheduling conflicts but also out of respect for those who had passed. He said, "When Angus died, it was tough. I loved him deeply, and I fought hard to keep him clean. The year he died, in 2023, he was one of 73,000 people in America who died of a fentanyl overdose."
He added that the experience taught him profound lessons about life and mortality: "Death is what gives life meaning. You can't be arrogant about existence. You're forced to reckon with the fact that life itself is a wonder, a gift, a profound blessing."
Regarding how the show honors Angus Cloud’s character, Levinson revealed that Fezco remains part of the narrative through various scenes, including phone conversations. He expressed his desire to keep the character alive within the show's universe as a tribute: "I thought that if I couldn't keep him alive in life then maybe within this show that I can control and keep him alive there." Levinson also hinted at a compelling storyline for Fezco in the final episodes that he believes Angus would have enjoyed.
The third season features the return of many beloved cast members. Alongside Zendaya, Hunter Schafer is confirmed to reappear, although she has yet to be seen in season 3 episodes. Maude Apatow also makes a comeback in the season premiere, and Eric Dane appears posthumously, having completed his scenes before his death. Alexa Demie and Jacob Elordi are also back reprising their roles, with Sydney Sweeney continuing as Cassie.
Colman Domingo returns with a more prominent role this season, as evidenced by the season 3 premiere. New additions include Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who was introduced in a key role, and Martha Kelly, who portrays Laurie, a character presenting significant challenges for Rue in this season.
Other familiar faces such as Chloe Cherry continue their roles, while Toby Wallace debuts as Wayne, a drug dealer and romantic interest for Faye. Jessica Treska also made a memorable impression in the premiere, and Anna Van Patten, sister of Grace Van Patten, joins the cast with a supporting role.
The evolving cast reflects the series' continued exploration of complex themes such as mental illness, toxic relationships, sexuality, and the struggles of adolescence. Based on the Israeli series of the same name, Euphoria has maintained its reputation for unflinching storytelling and strong performances.
As the show returns after several years, fans can expect a blend of heartfelt tributes, new dynamics, and the continuation of intense character arcs. The combination of returning favorites and fresh talent sets the stage for a season that honors its past while pushing the story forward.
Despite the hurdles faced by the production team and cast, the release of season 3 marks a significant moment for the series and its audience. The creative team’s commitment to respecting those lost and delivering a powerful narrative underscores the season’s importance beyond entertainment.
With its mix of drama, emotion, and character-driven storytelling, Euphoria season 3 looks poised to captivate viewers once again upon its release on HBO.
