AceShowbiz - The design firm known as Hipgnosis, famed for creating some of the most memorable album covers in rock history, has been acquired by Primary Wave. The announcement was made public on Monday, though the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Hipgnosis boasts a legendary legacy of iconic artwork, including covers for Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Led Zeppelin's House of the Holy, and Black Sabbath's Technical Ecstasy. These images have become synonymous with classic rock and are celebrated worldwide for their artistic innovation.
Despite the acquisition, artwork from some of the most famous albums by Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin was excluded from the deal. Instead, the agreement covers the rights to images associated with other notable artists such as Queen, Bad Company, Peter Gabriel, Styx, Def Leppard, Foreigner, Yes, AC/DC, and Genesis.
The deal includes the interests of co-founder Aubrey "Po" Powell, who played a pivotal role in the creative direction of the company. Primary Wave’s acquisition aims to expand its portfolio of music-related intellectual property by adding the visual artistry that Hipgnosis is known for.
This acquisition highlights the continued value and influence of album art within the music industry, preserving the cultural significance of these classic images for future generations. Hipgnosis’s imagery remains an enduring element of rock music’s visual identity, even as the industry evolves.
