This announcement ends months of speculation about Nyong’o’s involvement and highlights her versatile presence in the film.

Lupita Nyong'o takes on the challenging task of playing both Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra. Helen, famously known as the most beautiful woman in the world, is married to Menelaus, portrayed by Jon Bernthal. Her abduction by a prince is the catalyst for the legendary Trojan War. Meanwhile, Nyong’o’s second role, Clytemnestra, is the wife of Agamemnon, Menelaus’ brother, played by Benny Safdie.

This dual casting was revealed in a recent Time magazine profile of Christopher Nolan, which also shed light on the director’s creative decisions regarding the film’s mythical elements. Nolan opted against casting actors to represent the gods of Mount Olympus, a choice that diverges from many traditional adaptations of the ancient tale.

“I became more interested in the idea that, to people in that period, evidence of gods was everywhere,” Nolan explained. He elaborated that the film uses natural elements and characters’ beliefs to evoke the divine, rather than personifying gods on screen. “The wonderful thing about cinema, and IMAX in particular, is that you can take an audience to a place of immersion, feeling close to events like storms, turbulent seas, high winds. You want the audience to be on the boat with them fearing the ocean, fearing the wrath of Poseidon, the way the characters do. That to me is so much more powerful than any individual image you can have [of a god],” Nolan said.

In addition to Nyong'o, the film boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Anne Hathaway stars as Penelope, Queen of Ithaca and wife of Odysseus, portrayed by Matt Damon. Hathaway revealed that the cast stayed in modest accommodations on a small island in Sicily to maintain the movie’s estimated $250 million budget. She noted, “You've got Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, a slew of other very fine actors, me, and we're all staying in budget accommodation ... because there's no indulgent nonsense. It's just about the work, and we're all so happy to be there.”

The cast also features Tom Holland as Telemachus, the son of Odysseus; Charlize Theron as the nymph Calypso; Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Penelope’s suitor; and John Leguizamo as Eumaeus, Odysseus’s loyal servant. Christopher Nolan also offered insight into the casting of rapper Travis Scott as a bard in the film.
