Discover 6 bold audiovisual projects at KVIFF Talents 2025, including a K-pop series and historical drama, with mentorship and funding for emerging filmmakers.

AceShowbiz - The upcoming 60th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF), scheduled from July 3 to 11, will spotlight six innovative audiovisual projects during its KVIFF Talents program, held as part of the KVIFF Industry Days event.

Among the selected projects, which were chosen from over 100 submissions, are a K-pop-themed series titled K-Dream, a historical drama series called Burning Witches, and a feature film set in the unique social landscape of socialist Czechoslovakia. Participants in the program will benefit from development funding, mentorship by industry professionals, opportunities to pitch their projects at the festival, and access to production facilities for proof-of-concept videos, along with stays and residencies in Karlovy Vary.

In the Feature Pool, dedicated to full-length films, three projects will be presented. The first is Exposed, the feature fiction debut of director Klára Tasovská and producer Lukáš Kokeš. Set against the backdrop of the semi-legal queer milieu of socialist Czechoslovakia in the 1980s, the mystery thriller unfolds over 24 hours in Prague during the normalization period. It centers on a young female photographer facing personal dilemmas and the courage to defend her own reality.

The second feature project, Nera, marks the debut of director Ivana Vogrinc Vidali and screenwriter Darja Miková. It tells the story of Tereza, a recent high school graduate whose life is dramatically altered by a diagnosis that gradually results in blindness. She finds solace in her guide dog Nera, but their relationship reveals the difficulties of a system that demands strict obedience and suppresses instinct.

The final film in this category is Until We Leave, the debut screenplay of Lucia ?ižinská, produced by Tereza Wi?ski. This intimate drama follows four women in their 30s on a road trip to France to visit a terminally ill friend. Their journey becomes a profound confrontation with their own lives, relationships, and future aspirations, blending elements of tragicomedy and observational cinema.

In the Creative Pool, which welcomes projects in any audiovisual format, two fiction series and one animated film will be showcased. The animated feature The Inhalatorium, directed and animated by Bára Anna Stejskalová, tells the story of a 13-year-old girl who arrives at a mountain sanatorium for asthma treatment. When her friend mysteriously disappears and the staff remain silent, she embarks on a quest to find him.

Burning Witches, a series written by Martina Babišová and V?ra Stare?ková and produced by Dagmar Sedlá?ková, is set in the 17th century on the Bohemian-Polish borderlands. The narrative follows noblewoman Katuše, who fights to save her sister from execution by fire, while also striving to empower those around her in a harsh historical context.

The final project is the K-pop-inspired series K-Dream, created by director Adam Sedlák and producers Linda Krej?í and Monika Soukup. The story revolves around Nik?, a European obsessed with K-pop culture. After failing to launch his own career as a K-pop star, he returns to Europe to establish the first K-pop idol academy in Berlin. Czech singer and actor Adam Mišík stars in the lead role and contributes as a co-screenwriter.

Since its inception, the KVIFF Talents program has supported a total of 23 projects, providing emerging filmmakers and creators a platform to develop and present their work to an international audience. This year’s selection reflects a diverse range of stories and styles, from historical dramas and personal journeys to genre-crossing series and animation.

The KVIFF Industry Days event continues to expand its scope, offering participants unique opportunities to connect with industry experts, secure funding, and gain visibility at one of Europe’s most prestigious film festivals. The inclusion of projects like K-Dream and Burning Witches highlights the festival’s commitment to nurturing innovative and culturally rich content.

With a program blending emerging talent and compelling narratives, the 2024 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is set to be a significant platform for new voices in cinema and television, offering audiences a glimpse into fresh creative visions from Central Europe and beyond.
