AceShowbiz - Anna Van Patten has recently emerged as a notable new face on the hit HBO series Euphoria, stepping into a role that both challenges and expands the show’s intense narrative. While she may be a fresh presence on this provocative drama, Anna Van Patten is far from new to the entertainment world. She hails from one of Hollywood’s most enduring families, a legacy stretching back more than fifty years.
The Van Patten name is synonymous with television history. Her uncle, the late Dick Van Patten, was a beloved figure on the classic ABC family drama Eight Is Enough, where he portrayed the warm, dependable patriarch Tom Bradford. However, the contrast between his roles and Anna’s current work could not be starker. Unlike the wholesome family settings of her uncle’s era, Anna Van Patten now portrays Kitty, a new stripper who works at the Silver Slipper, a desert strip club featured in Euphoria. Her character’s harrowing experience with customers adds a raw and unsettling layer to the show’s unapologetically provocative storyline.
When asked about her familiarity with her uncle’s iconic show, Anna Van Patten, 27, admitted, “I’ve never actually seen an episode of Eight Is Enough. I mean, I’ve seen small clips. I know, it’s embarrassing.” Despite this, her own career has been steadily building. Fans may recognize her from a variety of TV and film appearances. Last year, she acted alongside her older sister Grace Van Patten in Hulu’s The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, portraying Amanda Knox’s younger sister, while Grace took the lead role. Previously, Anna held a recurring part on the popular series Gossip Girl, appeared in the 2022 horror film Master, and made guest appearances on procedural hits like Law & Order: SVU and FBI: Most Wanted.
Her debut on Euphoria, however, marks a significant step forward. The role of Kitty demanded both emotional depth and physical skill, including pole dancing—something Anna Van Patten had never done before. She shared that upon receiving the callback, she began taking pole-dancing lessons, which she says helped her manifest the part. While in Budapest, where she was filming at the time, she even visited a local strip club to better understand the environment, overcoming language barriers to gain insight from the dancers there.
Discussing the difficult and intense scenes she had to film, Anna acknowledged the emotional toll they took. “I’m fortunate in that I’ve never been in Kitty’s situation, but yeah, it was tough. It’s sad and it’s dark, but it serves a purpose in the greater story,” she explained. She emphasized the support she received on set, including from an intimacy coordinator and the cast and crew, which allowed her to explore the character’s darker emotions safely. After filming, she described how she would metaphorically wash the experience away by taking a shower, compartmentalizing the challenging material.
Family ties run deep for Anna Van Patten. Growing up, she and her sister Grace shared a close bond, even working together professionally. Yet their real-life sibling dynamics differ from the characters they portrayed in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox. Anna revealed that their on-screen fight scene felt surreal compared to their usual way of resolving sibling disputes, which typically involved more physical playfulness. She joked about their differing strengths, with Grace boasting strong upper body strength and herself having a stronger lower body, making their skirmishes a matter of leverage and technique.
Their father, Tim Van Patten, is a celebrated TV director whose work helped shape the modern prestige drama. He has directed more episodes of The Sopranos than anyone else, helmed the pilot of Game of Thrones, and directed episodes of acclaimed shows like The Wire, Rome, and Boardwalk Empire. Anna fondly recalls spending time on sets during her childhood, describing it as her favorite activity. Her father encouraged her and her siblings to explore the elaborate sets freely, experiencing ancient Rome or the 1920s first-hand through the immersive environments he helped create. Watching films with her dad was also an educational experience, as he would excitedly explain different filming techniques and camera work.
Despite her family’s deep roots in the industry, Anna Van Patten has not relied solely on her lineage. She has auditioned for parts on her father’s shows, including Boardwalk Empire, though she acknowledges not always being the right fit for roles. Her father remains supportive, often assisting her with audition tapes and giving advice on camera angles and performance techniques, even if they sometimes disagree on the best approaches.
In an amusing anecdote, Anna revealed she was nearly cast in the Game of Thrones pilot as a deceased girl hanging from a tree. However, her father thought the scene might be too disturbing for both himself and a 10-year-old Anna, so she was ultimately not included. To make up for it, she was allowed to arrange the placement of dismembered body parts found in the woods after the White Walkers’ attack.
Alongside acting, Anna has explored directing, taking classes at the New School in Greenwich Village. While she dreams about directing in the future, she admits she is uncertain about what story she wants to tell. For now, her focus remains on acting and learning from the various directors she encounters on set.
Another important figure in her life was her uncle, Dick Van Patten, who passed away in 2015 when Anna was about 15. Although the family is split between New York and Los Angeles branches, she treasured the times spent with him during holidays on the West Coast. She recalls fond memories of going to the racetrack with Uncle Dickie, learning to bet on horses based on their colors and names, and even meeting jockeys. He was regarded as royalty at the racetrack and left a lasting impression on her with his larger-than-life personality.
As for the next generation, Anna has a 14-year-old sister who is currently deciding between pursuing acting or basketball. The family is encouraging her to prioritize basketball first, with the hope she might consider the WNBA before embarking on an acting career.
Anna Van Patten’s journey from a Hollywood family legacy into a bold new role on Euphoria is a testament to her willingness to carve out her own path. Balancing respect for her family’s storied history with the demands of her challenging new character, she is establishing herself as a compelling talent to watch in the entertainment industry.
