AceShowbiz - More than three decades after the original release of Juan Luis Guerra’s "Estrellitas y Duendes," the Dominican singer-songwriter’s timeless hit has returned to the spotlight, this time featuring a collaboration with British musician Sting. The revamped version of the song has set new milestones for both artists on the Billboard Latin charts.
The Spanish-language duet made its debut at No. 24 on the Tropical Airplay chart dated March 21, marking Guerra's return to this chart after a two-year hiatus and Sting's first-ever appearance on the survey. This notable entry highlights the ongoing evolution of both artists’ careers and their ability to cross musical and cultural boundaries.
Sting expressed his excitement about this achievement, saying, “I'm thrilled to be on the Billboard Latin charts with friends Juan Luis Guerra and Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso.” He also reflected on his past collaborations with Latin American musicians, including Rubén Blades and Charly García, emphasizing that these experiences have been some of the most treasured moments in his career.
Meanwhile, Guerra shared his admiration for Sting's contribution to the track, stating, “Working with Sting has been an immense honor. His artistry and sensitivity brought a new light to 'Estrellitas y Duendes.' Hearing him sing one of my songs in Spanish is a great gift and privilege.”
The original version of "Estrellitas y Duendes" was released as the fifth single from Guerra's fifth studio album, Bachata Rosa, in 1991. This album earned him his first No. 1 on the Top Tropical Albums chart, where it reigned for 12 weeks—the longest run that year. The song itself reached No. 3 on the Hot Latin Songs chart in March 1991, marking Guerra's third top 10 hit on that chart.
The new collaborative version of "Estrellitas y Duendes" was released under Rimas Entertainment in November and quickly made an impact, debuting and peaking at No. 9 on the Latin Digital Song Sales chart during the same month. With its entry on Tropical Airplay, Guerra revisited the chart after scoring his 24th top 10 hit with "La Noviecita" earlier in March 2024.
Although Sting has been a prominent figure on music charts since 1979—as the lead singer of The Police and later as a solo artist—this collaboration marks his first appearance on a Latin radio chart. Notably, he sings entirely in Spanish on this track, a departure from his usual English-language repertoire. This follows his recent collaboration with Argentine duo Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso on "Hasta Jesús Tuvo Un Mal Día," which reached No. 23 on the Hot Latin Pop Songs chart on February 28.
Sting’s history of genre-crossing collaborations includes the 2000 hit "Desert Rose," featuring Algerian singer Cheb Mami performing in Arabic. That song reached the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100, showcasing his global musical reach. Over the years, Sting has also charted across a wide range of Billboard genres, including adult contemporary, alternative, classical, dance, holiday, R&B/hip-hop, reggae, rock, and world music.
This latest collaboration with Juan Luis Guerra not only bridges their distinct musical worlds but also expands their shared musical legacies, confirming their enduring relevance in the evolving Latin music scene.
