CBS expands the Fire Country universe with a new medical spin-off set in Edgewater, spotlighting first responder healthcare in early development.

AceShowbiz - CBS is reportedly working on expanding the Fire Country universe with a third series set in the Northern California town of Edgewater. Following the success of Sheriff Country, which launched in October 2025, this new project is expected to spotlight medical professionals, highlighting the healthcare side of first responders.
According to a recent Deadline report, the spin-off is still in very early development, so much so that it has not yet been officially pitched to CBS or CBS Studios. Although specific plot details remain under wraps, insiders suggest that the new series will center on a team of medical experts operating in Edgewater, further broadening the franchise’s coverage of emergency services.
The report also hints at the possibility of introducing a key character from Sheriff Country season 2 to help launch the new show. CBS previously announced that actors Amanda Arcuri and Ian Quinlan will be promoted from recurring roles to series regulars in the upcoming season of Sheriff Country, but it remains uncertain if either will be involved in the medical drama spin-off.
The franchise’s growth strategy echoes the path taken by earlier entries. For example, Sheriff Country was initially introduced through Fire Country, with Morena Baccarin’s character first appearing in the original series before the spin-off debuted. CBS appears to be following this blueprint as it continues to build the Edgewater franchise.
The untitled medical drama would be executive produced by Sheriff Country showrunner Matt Lopez, alongside Max Thieriot, Joan Rater, and Tony Phelan. Veteran producers Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed will also executive produce under Jerry Bruckheimer Television. Despite these notable names, no writer has yet been attached to the project due to its early development status.
Introducing a medical series makes logical sense for the franchise, as Fire Country has already featured several EMTs, paramedics, and other healthcare workers throughout its three-year run. If greenlit, the new show would place Fire Country alongside other successful CBS franchises such as NCIS, CSI, and FBI, all of which have multiple interconnected series within their universes.
This expansion would mark an impressive milestone for Fire Country, which debuted in 2023 and quickly became the most-watched new series on CBS that season. The network’s previous attempt to extend the universe with Fire Country: Surfside, starring Jared Padalecki, did not come to fruition. However, with Fire Country now in its fourth season and Sheriff Country proving to be a hit, there appears to be sufficient momentum to explore further stories set in Edgewater.
The continued development of spin-offs demonstrates CBS’s commitment to building a robust franchise around the interconnected worlds of firefighting, law enforcement, and emergency medical response. As the medical drama project remains in its infancy, fans will be watching closely for more updates on casting, writing, and production timelines.
