AceShowbiz - Netflix has revealed its latest production, the film El sobrino, created by acclaimed Argentine writer and director Damián Szifron, known for his work on Wild Tales and To Catch a Killer. The movie stars Leonardo Sbaraglia, recognized for his roles in Elite, Pain and Glory, and Wild Tales. Also featured are Rita Cortese, Luisana Lopilato, Valeria Lois, and newcomer Luan Adler Fuks, with special appearances by Vincent Macaigne and the legendary Italian actor Franco Nero.
The dramedy, currently without an official English title, is both written and directed by Damián Szifron, whose 2014 film Wild Tales was Argentina’s submission and nominee for the Academy Award’s Best Foreign Language Film category.
Described as a story about a celebrated pianist whose life is upended when he discovers that his nine-year-old nephew possesses extraordinary musical talent, El sobrino—translated as "The Nephew"—promises an emotionally rich journey. The synopsis states: "A world-renowned pianist at the peak of his power finds his life turned upside down when he discovers that his nine-year-old nephew has a musical gift that could eclipse his own."
Production on El sobrino began on Monday in Ramos Mejía, located in the Buenos Aires province. The film is set within the high-stakes world of classical music and will follow its characters across several international cities, including Buenos Aires, Hamburg, London, and New York. The production is handled by K&S Films, with producers Hugo Sigman, Matías Mosteirin, and Leticia Cristi leading the project. Julián Apezteguía serves as the director of photography.
Damián Szifron expressed the intensity and excitement of starting filming: "Starting a film shoot is an intense experience. It marks the point where a significant flow of visual and narrative ideas, extensively discussed with teams of artists and collaborators, cross the threshold of imagination and begin to transform into concrete images and sounds." He described the filmmaking process as a form of magic, despite the pressures and risks involved, emphasizing the importance of creativity and collaboration.
The filmmaker also reflected on the blend of art and industry in cinema, noting that "the films that have most impacted me reside at the intersection of art and industry." He praised Netflix's support as a leading global content producer and the close partnership with K&S Films, which he described as akin to family. Szifron highlighted the significance of working with Leonardo Sbaraglia during an impressive phase in his career, as well as reconnecting with Rita Cortese, and collaborating with Luisana Lopilato, Valeria Lois, Luan Adler Fuks, and his childhood idol Franco Nero.
Producer Matías Mosteirin added praise for the project, describing the script as possibly the best he has ever read. He noted Damián Szifron’s skillful genre-blending and his ability to use comedy to delve into profound human themes. According to Mosteirin, El sobrino invites audiences to contemplate art and creation, family bonds, love, loneliness, origins, and the passage of time, all wrapped in humor and beauty.
With its compelling premise, international setting, and a strong creative team led by Damián Szifron and starring Leonardo Sbaraglia, El sobrino is poised to be a remarkable addition to Netflix’s global film slate. The project’s mix of emotional depth, humor, and exploration of familial and artistic themes marks it as an eagerly awaited production for audiences worldwide.
