AceShowbiz - The Korean entertainment powerhouse, Kakao Entertainment, has announced a significant reorganization of its executive leadership aimed at strengthening its global market presence and platform innovation.
At the company’s annual shareholders' meeting on March 25, JungHee Ko was officially appointed as co-CEO, joining the existing co-CEO, Joseph Chang. This leadership shift reflects Kakao Entertainment’s strategic focus on integrating advanced technology with its intellectual property (IP) assets to enhance its competitive edge worldwide.
According to a press release, Ko was chosen for the role due to her "extensive knowledge and experience in developing innovative service strategies centered on platforms and AI." Prior to this appointment, she held key positions at Kakao Bank, including head of the AI group, chief strategy officer, and chief service officer.
In her new capacity, Ko will oversee the company’s newly formed chief platform officer (CPO) division. This unit is responsible for managing Kakao’s platform services business, focusing on advancing the company’s core IP platforms. These platforms include the music streaming service Melon, the web novels and webtoons platform KakaoPage, and the K-culture fandom platform Berriz.
Joseph Chang, meanwhile, will lead another newly established division, the global growth center. His mandate is to expand Kakao Entertainment’s international footprint by strengthening the planning, production, and distribution of IP across music, story, and media sectors. The goal is to build a diversified portfolio of globally influential IPs and explore new business opportunities, particularly in the United States.
Before his current role, Chang served as CEO of Sony Music Entertainment Korea and co-CEO of Sony Music Entertainment’s Asia hub, bringing extensive industry experience to his leadership at Kakao.
The company emphasized that the combination of Ko’s expertise in platform innovation and AI with Chang’s global business acumen and IP networks will create stronger synergies. Together, they aim to expand the global fandom ecosystem surrounding K-culture by leveraging Kakao Entertainment’s IP competitiveness and platform capabilities.
Kakao Entertainment is the parent company of several prominent record labels, including Starship Entertainment, which manages K-pop groups such as Monsta X and IVE. Other labels under its umbrella include Antenna, Edam Entertainment, and IST Entertainment. Additionally, Kakao is a major shareholder in SM Entertainment and jointly launched a North American division with the company in 2023.
In a joint statement, Ko and Chang expressed their commitment to blending Kakao’s platform strengths with its entertainment IP to build a more globalized and dynamic cultural presence.
Meanwhile, Warner Records Nashville has made several key leadership and creative team appointments to bolster its operations. Among the changes, Patrick Sabatini was named executive vice president of operations and business & legal affairs.
