This film chronicles the life of the legendary musician Michael Jackson, tracing his rise from his early days with the Jackson 5 to his solo career, focusing on both his professional milestones and personal challenges.

Unlike many other projects about the King of Pop, Michael aimed to provide a fresh perspective by diving deeper into behind-the-scenes moments rather than emphasizing the widely publicized scandals and legal controversies that surrounded him. The final version of the film concludes with Michael Jackson performing on his "Bad" tour, following a pivotal scene where he confronts and distances himself from his father.

However, an earlier script draft presented a far darker conclusion. It depicted Jackson staring at his reflection in a mirror while police lights flashed outside, set during the 1993 period when he faced sexual assault allegations. This somber ending was ultimately removed.

In addition to the revised ending, another significant scene cut in post-production showed law enforcement officers searching Neverland Ranch for evidence. Initial plans by Lionsgate, the movie’s distributor, were to explicitly portray how these allegations impacted Jackson. Yet, all references to the accusations were excised before release.

The reason behind these removals reportedly stemmed from legal complications involving the singer’s estate. Lawyers uncovered a settlement clause with one of the accusers that prohibited any mention of the individual in film projects. This discovery occurred too late in the production process, forcing the creative team to quickly devise a new ending for the movie.

Production faced further challenges when screenwriter John Logan’s home was damaged in the Palisades fire, causing additional delays. Initially set for release on April 18, 2025, the film’s debut was postponed multiple times, finally premiering on April 24, 2026. After the rewrites were completed, the cast returned for 22 days of additional shooting to extend existing scenes and film new material, ensuring a seamless narrative flow.

Insiders also revealed that Jackson’s estate financed these extra production costs, as it holds an equity stake in the biopic. This involvement underscores the estate’s commitment to shaping the film’s portrayal of the artist.

Despite the obstacles and the removal of the original third act, these edits may have benefited the film’s reception. By deliberately avoiding the sensationalized legal battles that have dominated previous portrayals of Michael Jackson, the movie offers audiences a more nuanced view of the artist. This approach allows viewers to connect with aspects of his life and career that are often overshadowed by controversy.
