AceShowbiz - The new CBS spinoff series Marshals marks the return of Kayce Dutton, originally from the world of Yellowstone, but this time his life is notably different. The show follows Kayce, the youngest son of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton, as he becomes part of a U.S. Marshals team investigating crimes across Montana. The first episode begins roughly 12 to 15 months after the events of the Yellowstone finale, revealing Kayce struggling to move forward after the tragic loss of his partner Monica.
Monica Long, played by Kelsey Asbille in Yellowstone, was a key presence in Kayce’s life. However, in Marshals, she is missing due to her untimely death, which has left Kayce emotionally shattered while raising their son Tate (played by Brecken Merrill) on his own. Actor Luke Grimes, who portrays Kayce, explained during a Television Critics Association virtual press event that when the audience reconnects with Kayce, he is at "the end of his emotional road" after losing his soulmate.
“I remember thinking, ‘How is this going to work?’” Grimes said, reflecting on the challenge of writing Kayce’s storyline post-Monica. He added that the show finds a compelling way to give Kayce a new purpose, especially through his bond with an old Navy SEAL friend, alongside his commitment to his son Tate. Despite this, Kayce remains a "really lost man" as the series begins.
The premiere episode is deliberately vague about the details surrounding Monica’s death. It opens with Kayce and Tate living on their small ranch in Montana, where Kayce is haunted by dreams of not finding Monica and waking up alone. The show gradually reveals more about Monica’s fate through Tate’s involvement in a protest against toxic mining in the preservation area, which ties into the cause of her death.
Creator Spencer Hudnut confirmed that Monica became ill and died from cancer caused by water poisoning, a condition that developed during the gap between the Yellowstone finale and the start of Marshals. Hudnut emphasized that the storyline was crafted to highlight a significant real-world issue: the high cancer rates on reservations due to environmental contamination. He noted the importance for both the cast and the creators of Yellowstone to use Monica’s death to shed light on this serious matter.
Hudnut explained, “This is what actually pulls Kayce into this world. Monica is kind of guiding Kayce to find his new path.” This narrative direction sets the stage for Kayce’s reluctant involvement with the marshal team, which unfolds over the course of the first episode.
By the episode’s conclusion, Kayce agrees to join the U.S. Marshals team full time, launching a new procedural chapter within the Yellowstone universe. Notably, Marshals is the first project in the franchise not to be overseen daily by Taylor Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone. Still, Hudnut reassures fans that Sheridan’s creative influence remains embedded in the show’s DNA despite his absence from day-to-day production.
Transitioning from Paramount Network cable to CBS broadcast, Marshals retains the franchise’s focus on deep character development rather than pure procedural elements. The series also brings back familiar faces from Yellowstone, including Gil Birmingham and Mo Brings Plenty, though one of these returning characters suffers a serious injury by the episode’s end.
Hudnut discussed how the show uses weekly cases and missions not only to drive the plot but also to reveal more about the main characters. He noted, “This is not a hardcore procedural where by the end of the first act, we’ve been through seven red herrings and are putting clues together. It’s really a character-forward show.”
Marshals airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS, with episodes available for streaming the following day on Paramount+. The series expands the Yellowstone universe by exploring new storylines while maintaining the emotional depth and regional authenticity fans expect.
