AceShowbiz - Widow's Bay is an upcoming Apple TV series that promises to deliver a distinctive mix of horror and comedy, as revealed by star Matthew Rhys. During Apple TV's press day at Santa Monica's Barker Hangar on February 3, 2026, Rhys shared insights into the show's tone and his role as the island mayor, Tom Loftis.
The recently released teaser for Widow's Bay sets a chilling mood, featuring ominous music and eerie scenes from a remote New England island. However, the preview’s closing moments hint that the series will not be a conventional scare-fest. Instead, it injects unexpected humor into its supernatural premise. For example, when Rhys' character questions the local lore about a killer sea hag, Stephen Root’s character offers a startlingly funny reply: "She crawls into your bed and sits on your face."
This blend of horror and comedy reflects the creative vision of showrunner and creator Katie Dippold. The story centers on the coastal town of Widow's Bay, located 40 miles off New England, where Mayor Tom Loftis is struggling to revive his community. Facing challenges like poor Wi-Fi, unreliable cell service, and a population steeped in superstition, Loftis is determined to transform the island into a thriving tourist destination for the sake of his teenage son.
As the series progresses, the once-dismissed supernatural tales begin to manifest in unsettling ways, heightening the island’s tension. Rhys stars alongside Stephen Root, Kate O’Flynn, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll, and Dale Dickey in this 10-episode drama.
Reflecting on the script, Rhys expressed enthusiasm for the show's originality during the panel discussion. He said, "I'd certainly never read anything like it. I'd grown up with things like the Wicker Man and Jaws, and this was kind of everything I'd always thought I would never get to do." The combination of horror and comedic elements made the project feel like a dream job for him.
In addition to starring, Rhys is also an executive producer on the series. Widow's Bay was created, showrun, and executive produced by Katie Dippold, known for her skillful mix of genres. Emmy-winning director Hiro Murai, celebrated for his work on shows like Atlanta and The Bear, directs and executive produces alongside producers Carver Karaszewski, Claudia Shin, and Rhys. Additional directors include Ti West, Sam Donovan, and Andrew DeYoung.
Hiro Murai highlighted the show’s unique tone during the event, calling it unlike anything he had ever read. He described the series as feeling both period and modern simultaneously. Murai admitted that when he first read the scripts, he was uncertain about the exact genre, which he found to be an exciting creative challenge. The combination of heartfelt comedy and genuinely terrifying horror, along with emotionally honest character portrayals, sets Widow's Bay apart.
Rhys emphasized that the comedic moments are not forced but arise organically from the situations the characters face. He explained, "There's no conscious choice of anything comedic. Everything is played for real in the situation and then what comes comes." He also praised Murai’s visionary direction, noting how the dark visual style continually surprised him in the best way while enhancing the story’s depth.
The series will premiere globally on Apple TV on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, with the first three episodes dropping simultaneously. New episodes will then release weekly every Wednesday until June 17.
Widow's Bay promises to be a fresh and intriguing addition to Apple TV’s lineup, thanks to its rare fusion of chilling horror and sharp humor, anchored by a talented cast and creative team. Fans of genre-bending storytelling will likely find much to anticipate in this atmospheric series.
