AceShowbiz - Netflix is moving forward with a new series adaptation based on the bestselling 2002 novel The Nanny Diaries by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus. The project will see Scarlett Johansson, who starred in the 2007 film adaptation, returning as an executive producer alongside Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions.
The series will be adapted by Amy Chozick, known for The Girls on the Bus, and Jenny Bicks, who worked on Sex and the City and HBO’s Divorce. Both will also serve as showrunners for the potential series, which plans to offer a fresh perspective on the story compared to the original film.
While the 2007 movie followed the book’s plot closely, the new series will focus on Annie, a struggling writer who takes a nanny position for a charismatic Upper East Side socialite. As Annie aims to secure a book deal by going undercover, she becomes immersed in a world of extreme wealth and secrecy. The series logline hints at Annie’s challenge to maintain her double life while growing emotionally attached to the people around her and uncovering the true nature of her elusive employer.
Authors McLaughlin and Kraus both drew from their personal experiences as nannies when writing the novel, lending authenticity to the story’s depiction of the lives of New York’s elite.
The Nanny Diaries joins Netflix’s slate of literary adaptations, which recently added a series based on Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections. The streamer’s current hit shows include Bridgerton, His & Hers, and The Night Agent.
Executive producers on the project include Chozick, Bicks, and Johansson through her banner These Pictures, along with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman of Berlanti Productions. Additionally, Jonathan Lia and Keenan Flynn of These Pictures, as well as Gary Barber and Sean Hoagland of Spyglass Media Group, will also executive produce.
The announcement was first reported by Deadline, confirming Netflix’s intent to develop this highly anticipated adaptation for its streaming platform.
