AceShowbiz - The documentary series Born to Bowl offers a look into the professional bowling world, narrated by actor Liev Schreiber. Known for his role in Ray Donovan and his narration of HBO Sports’ docuseries Hard Knocks, Schreiber brings a voice to this dive into the sport. The film’s directors, James Lee Hernandez and Brian Lazarte, along with executive producer Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Productions, crafted a series that focuses on the players.
Hernandez and Lazarte, who also made McMillions, followed several professional bowlers—including Kyle Troup, Anthony Simonsen, EJ Tackett, and Jason Belmonte—across the United States and Australia. The series captures their lives beyond the lanes.
In a Q&A, Hernandez and Lazarte revealed the thought process behind the series’ title. “Born to Bowl felt fitting because for many of these athletes, bowling is a lifelong commitment, often starting in childhood with family support,” Lazarte said. Hernandez added that the alliteration was a bonus, and the title conveys the essence of the show.
One of the series’ features is the narration by Liev Schreiber, whose involvement was not initially planned. Hernandez explained that the complexity of bowling required clear explanations to help viewers understand the nuances.
Initially, the filmmakers considered actors from famous bowling movies for the narration. However, they realized the series needed a “straight man” voice. “Because Liev Schreiber is known for serious HBO sports documentaries and also has great comedic timing—we thought he was perfect,” Hernandez said. Schreiber watched the rough cuts and agreed to narrate. Lazarte praised Schreiber’s distinctive voice.
Both Hernandez and Lazarte are bowlers themselves, though at different levels. Hernandez shared that he grew up in bowling leagues. Lazarte bowls mainly for fun. Their experience gave them a perspective when immersing themselves in the professional bowling world.
Watching the series, it becomes clear that professional bowling is a grind. “They invest months traveling, staying in Airbnbs or hotels, sometimes sharing rooms, all while hoping to place well enough to cover expenses,” Lazarte explained. “Only the very best can truly make a living solely from prize money and sponsorships.”
The filmmakers acknowledged the view outsiders might have about this lifestyle. “It’s not actually romantic for the people grinding every day, but it’s easy to romanticize from the outside,” Hernandez said.
By following bowlers through every stage, the series paints a portrait of dedication. It shows the sacrifices these athletes make.
Ultimately, Born to Bowl is a sports documentary. It is a celebration of the culture of professional bowling. With Liev Schreiber’s narration, the series invites viewers to appreciate the skill behind every roll of the ball.
For fans of sports documentaries, Born to Bowl offers a glimpse into a world rarely seen. Hernandez and Lazarte’s work stands as a testament to the athletes who dedicate their lives to the sport.
