AceShowbiz - William Shatner, famously known as Captain James T. Kirk, has shared his thoughts on the recent announcement that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will conclude after its second season. Expressing disappointment, Shatner took to X on Monday evening to address the series' cancellation and the backlash the show received during its run.
In his posts, Shatner reflected on the criticism faced by the new series, comparing it to the challenges the original Star Trek encountered decades ago. He recalled the controversy sparked by the groundbreaking interracial kiss between his character, Capt. Kirk, and Lt. Uhura (portrayed by Nichelle Nichols) in the Season 3 episode "Plato’s Stepchildren." At the time, many southern TV stations refused to air the episode, condemning the show for breaking societal norms.
“Using today’s vernacular it would absolutely be called ‘woke DEI crap’ because it went against ‘norms’ of society for its time,” Shatner wrote, highlighting how little has changed in the way some audiences react to progressive content.
Although Shatner admitted he had only watched a few clips of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, he defended the franchise’s enduring ability to explore multiple dimensions of storytelling. He emphasized that the show's appeal lies in its blend of imaginative science fiction and profound human themes.
“It exists in the fantasy of science fiction—strange and wonderful concepts imagining possibilities of exploration and human endeavor,” Shatner explained. “But it also exists in the fantasy of human beings, the perfection of humanity, the eternal quest for knowledge and moral growth.”
He added that this dual nature is what he has always loved about Star Trek—its capacity to present futuristic visions crafted by talented creators while addressing timeless human questions, including the struggles and joys of existence.
Shatner concluded with a hopeful note, expressing his desire to see Star Trek continue for many years. “Star Trek should exist for a long time to come based on those truths,” he said, reaffirming his support for the franchise’s longevity and continuity.
As a reminder, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was renewed for a second season in October 2024, prior to its debut. However, Paramount+ has not yet announced when Season 2 will premiere. Fans and followers are invited to share their opinions on Shatner’s reflections and the future of the series.
