AceShowbiz - Obsession, the horror film written and directed by Curry Barker, premiered at SXSW following its initial screening at TIFF’s Midnight section. The film made a notable adjustment for its SXSW presentation by reducing the number of head-smashing scenes in what is considered its most intense and gory moment.
At TIFF, the scene contained about six or seven more violent hits, which led to the film being on track for an NC-17 rating. According to Barker, the filmmakers faced pressure to cut these violent moments but he resisted removing any of them initially. Ultimately, a compromise was reached, and some of the head-smash sequences were trimmed to meet rating requirements.
Focus Features acquired Obsession shortly after its TIFF screening in a deal reported to be worth over $15 million. The film follows a hopeless romantic who, after breaking the mysterious "One Wish Willow" to win over his crush, receives exactly what he desires. However, the fulfillment comes at a dark and sinister cost, revealing the dangerous consequences of wish fulfillment.
This strategic move from TIFF to SXSW, along with the editing changes, highlights the film’s careful balance between horror and narrative, aiming to retain its jump scares while meeting audience and rating standards. Obsession continues to generate buzz for its intense visuals and chilling storyline, positioning itself as a standout in the horror genre this season.
