AceShowbiz - Dax Shepard recently opened up about a deeply emotional moment during his father’s final days in the hospital, highlighting the extraordinary support he received from his wife, Kristen Bell. Speaking with Anderson Cooper on the CNN podcast All There Is With Anderson Cooper, Dax Shepard recounted how Kristen Bell's unexpected presence helped him through an overwhelmingly difficult time in 2012.
Dax Shepard described the hospital room where his father, Dave Shepard, was gravely ill as a place filled with a continuous stream of visitors. While everyone was kind and well-meaning, the constant presence of mourners meant Dax Shepard found himself in the exhausting role of comforting others rather than being able to grieve privately with his father. “His room was an unending parade of many, many people, and they were all lovely and well intentioned, but it put me in the position of them grieving and me having to comfort them,” he explained.
Feeling overwhelmed, Dax Shepard stepped out to his car for some solitude and called Kristen Bell to vent his frustration. What happened next left him deeply moved. “I was complaining, and she said, ‘It’s okay, I’m here. Look to the left,’” he recalled, his voice thick with emotion. Although they lived apart — he was in Detroit and she in California — when he looked to his left, there stood Kristen Bell, seven months pregnant.
Dax Shepard described how Kristen Bell had flown across the country without telling him, tracking down the hospital, and quietly showing up to support him. “She had flown, she knew I was struggling, and she had flown and not told me and figured out where this hospital was. Was standing next to the car,” he said, visibly emotional. “What a champ, you know?”
Following this touching reunion, the couple visited with Dax Shepard’s father together. At the time, Kristen Bell was pregnant with their first daughter, Lincoln. Despite his condition, Dave Shepard was able to feel his future granddaughter’s baby bump, creating a poignant moment of connection.
During the interview, Anderson Cooper also read aloud a 2013 blog post Dax Shepard wrote after his father’s passing. In it, Dax Shepard reflected on the bittersweet joy his father experienced meeting the new family member he would never see born. “He was smiling from ear to ear, sitting contentedly, unable to put together a sentence, but still capable of connecting to the new family member we were creating,” Dax Shepard wrote. “He wasn’t going to make it to the birth, but that didn’t get in the way of him meeting the new baby. It was an emotional and triumphant moment, one I will never forget.”
Dax Shepard went on to express his enduring gratitude to Kristen Bell for giving his father that final thrill. “If I live to be 1000, I will still be in debt to my wife for giving him that one last thrill.” Despite the heaviness of the memory, he ended on a lighter note, calling his wife “a gangster.”
