AceShowbiz - Troop Beverly Hills is set for a sequel with Cameron Diaz developing it as a possible star vehicle, according to recent announcements. The project is being developed at TriStar Pictures, with Clea DuVall tapped to write and direct the follow-up.
The original film featured Shelley Long as Phyllis Nefler, a Beverly Hills socialite who takes charge of a Girl Scout troop amid her divorce. Alongside Long, the cast included Craig T. Nelson, Betty Thomas, Mary Gross, Stephanie Beacham, Carla Gugino, and Jenny Lewis. The movie earned $8.5 million at the box office, which equates to roughly $22 million today, and has since gained a dedicated cult following.
While plot details for the sequel remain under wraps, the new film is being positioned as a potential star vehicle for Diaz, who is developing the project alongside her business partner Katherine Power. Laurence Mark will serve as a producer.
The original screenplay was penned by Pamela Norris and Margaret Oberman, based on the real-life experiences of Ava Fries, who inspired the story through her time leading her daughter's Girl Scout troop. The 1989 film was directed by Jeff Kanew and released by Sony Pictures.
Diaz has a history of starring in Sony projects, including the Charlie’s Angels franchise, The Holiday, and Bad Teacher. Meanwhile, DuVall, who will both write and direct the sequel, is recognized for her 2020 TriStar holiday comedy Happiest Season starring Kristen Stewart, and her acting roles in films like The Grudge and Argo. She is also set to appear in the upcoming season of The Last of Us.
Diaz is represented by LBI Entertainment, while DuVall is represented by UTA and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis.
Deadline was the first outlet to report on the development of the Troop Beverly Hills sequel.
