Mark Hamill shares his unique perspective on Lucasfilm's leadership shift, from George Lucas to Kathleen Kennedy and now new president Dave Filoni.

AceShowbiz - Mark Hamill, famed for his role in the original Star Wars trilogy, recently shared his thoughts on the leadership transition at Lucasfilm, welcoming Dave Filoni as the new president. The company, originally founded by George Lucas and renowned for iconic franchises such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Willow, and American Graffiti, has experienced significant shifts in management since its acquisition by Disney.
Following the sale to Disney, Kathleen Kennedy held the position of Lucasfilm president for several years. However, earlier this year, a major leadership change took place when Dave Filoni, a longtime Lucasfilm creative, was promoted to president after Kennedy’s departure. Having collaborated with George Lucas, Kathleen Kennedy, and now Filoni over the past five decades, Hamill possesses a unique perspective on how each has impacted the company’s direction.
In an interview with USA Today, Hamill expressed strong confidence in Filoni’s appointment, stating he “can’t think of better hands” to guide the brand forward. He emphasized that because George Lucas personally mentored Filoni, he deeply understands the original creator’s vision and sensibility.
“George was a mentor to Dave, so he knows George’s sensibility,” Hamill remarked, highlighting the significance of this creative lineage in maintaining the franchise’s legacy.
Reflecting on his own journey, Hamill noted that it has been 50 years since he first filmed what would become Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. Despite the passage of time, he confessed the milestone “doesn’t feel like 50 years,” though it does “make you feel old” as it brings back a flood of memories. “Time flies when you’re having fun,” he added with a nostalgic tone.
In that seminal film, later subtitled A New Hope, Hamill debuted as Luke Skywalker, starring alongside Harrison Ford as Han Solo and Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia Organa. The trio became the face of the original trilogy and reprised their roles in the sequel trilogy, beginning with The Force Awakens, which introduced a new generation of characters while weaving in the originals.
On television, Hamill also reprised Luke Skywalker in popular series such as The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, expanding his role within the Star Wars universe beyond the films.
Dave Filoni’s involvement with Star Wars dates back to 2008 when he directed the animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He then became the supervising director of the subsequent TV series of the same name. His creative influence expanded as he co-created and executive-produced Star Wars Rebels and developed additional animated projects including Star Wars Resistance, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, and the newest series Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord, which recently premiered on Disney+ and has already been renewed for a second season.
Transitioning into live-action, Filoni took on executive producer roles for The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and also created the upcoming series Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew. He will continue his influence with the soon-to-be-released film The Mandalorian and Grogu, scheduled for theaters on May 22, 2026.
In 2020, Filoni reached a pivotal moment at Lucasfilm when he was promoted to executive creative director. Three years later, he advanced further to become chief creative officer (CCO), solidifying his leadership within the company’s creative operations.
While Hamill’s active involvement with Star Wars appears to be winding down, the franchise itself is gearing up for numerous new projects. Alongside the Maul series and the Mandalorian-related film, Lucasfilm is developing Star Wars: Starfighter, scheduled for theatrical release on May 28, 2027, as well as a second season of Ahsoka and various other films and shows for both big and small screens.
The Star Wars franchise, created by George Lucas and launched in 1977, quickly became a cultural phenomenon following the release of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. Over decades, it has expanded into an extensive multimedia empire including sequels, prequels, TV series, video games, comics, and more. Since Disney’s acquisition, the universe has continued to grow robustly, particularly through Disney+ streaming content starting with The Mandalorian.
As the saga continues to evolve under Filoni’s stewardship, Hamill’s endorsement signals confidence in a future that honors the vision of its founder while expanding the Star Wars legacy into new creative territories.
