2026 Oscars air March 15, hosted by Conan O'Brien. Discover why awards season is stretching later, including the Actor Awards shift.

AceShowbiz - If you are a fan of awards season, you may have noticed that the 2026 edition is stretching out longer than in previous years. The 2026 Oscars are set to air on March 15, which is later than the ceremony has been held in recent memory.
The much-anticipated event, hosted by Conan O'Brien at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, traditionally concludes the awards season that kicks off every January. For 2026, the season officially began on January 4 with the Critics Choice Awards.
It’s not only the Oscars that have shifted later this year. The 2026 Actor Awards, formerly known as the SAG Awards, took place in March for the first time in over two decades. Historically scheduled in January, the Actor Awards have been pushed to late February since the COVID-19 pandemic began, and this year, they landed even later on March 1.
The scheduling adjustments for the Oscars have been influenced by multiple factors. While the pandemic delayed the 2021 ceremony until April 25, this year the event faced another global scheduling conflict—the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, held from February 6 to February 22. This is not unprecedented; the 2022 Oscars were also postponed to March 27 due to the Winter Games and the Super Bowl.
Despite the recent trend of holding the Oscars earlier in the year, March is actually a return to the ceremony’s historical timing. Most of the Academy Awards’ 98 ceremonies have taken place in March or April. The shift to February began with the 2004 Oscars, which fell on February 29, marking the first February ceremony since 1942.
When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the change in 2002, the reasoning was to boost ratings. John Pavlik, the Academy’s former director of communications, told The New York Times at the time: “The basic reason for doing this is to improve the position of the Academy Awards with regard to ratings and viewership. The ratings have been dipping in recent years, and this is just one of a number of things we’re trying to get those ratings up.”
The change was welcomed by industry insiders. Terry Press, former marketing chief at DreamWorks, explained to the New York Times that it helped condense awards season. She said, “By the time you get to the Academy Awards now, they’re almost anticlimactic. The same people tend to win over and over again. So by Oscar time you’ve already seen Julia Roberts six times in six different dresses. The Oscars needed to do this to restore their own luster.”
Regardless of the specific date, the Oscars night is always filled with anticipation and excitement. For 2026, many nominees are eager to see their names announced during the ceremony. Among the leading contenders is Wagner Moura, nominated for Actor in a Leading Role.
The 2026 awards season may be longer and more stretched out than usual, but the excitement and prestige remain as high as ever. With a slate of talented nominees and a ceremony returning to its traditional March timing, the Academy Awards will continue to be a major highlight on the entertainment calendar.
As the countdown to March 15 continues, audiences and nominees alike will be eagerly anticipating a night to celebrate outstanding achievements in cinema, made all the more special by the unique circumstances that shaped this year’s schedule.
