AceShowbiz - A popular science fiction book series, Dungeon Crawler Carl, is officially being adapted into a live-action television show with Seth MacFarlane attached as an executive producer. The series is based on the LitRPG (Literary Role-Playing Game) novels written by Matt Dinniman, which have garnered a dedicated fanbase since their release.
The television rights were initially acquired by Universal International Studios in early 2025. However, at that time, no specific network or streaming platform had been confirmed for the project. Now, a year later, the adaptation is actively in development at Peacock, with Seth MacFarlane producing through his Fuzzy Door banner, according to Variety.
Seth MacFarlane is well-known for creating the animated series Family Guy and the sci-fi comedy The Orville, and his involvement has sparked enthusiasm among fans and industry insiders alike. The announcement comes shortly after Matt Dinniman revealed the project was nearing a crucial decision-making phase concerning contracts and production commitments.
Addressing concerns from fans about the choice to develop a live-action version instead of an animated series, especially considering the fantasy and CGI-heavy elements of the story, Dinniman expressed confidence in the production team’s capabilities. He emphasized that the show would not move forward if the visual effects, such as the portrayal of Princess Donut—the talking tiara-wearing cat—did not meet high standards. He added, "Fuzzy Door, specifically, if you watch Ted or The Orville, you'll see that they know what they're doing when it comes to this."
In addition to Seth MacFarlane, Christopher Yost—known for his work on Thor: Ragnarok and The Mandalorian—is set to write and executive-produce the series. The original author Matt Dinniman will also serve as an executive producer, alongside Fuzzy Door’s Erica Huggins. Rachel Hargreaves-Heald has been named executive in charge of production for Fuzzy Door, ensuring the project maintains close oversight throughout development.
The premise of the Dungeon Crawler Carl series centers on a post-apocalyptic Earth where an alien invasion has decimated much of humanity. Survivors are forced to participate in a brutal intergalactic game show. The protagonist, Coast Guard veteran Carl, finds himself paired with his ex-girlfriend’s self-absorbed, talking cat named Princess Donut. Together, they must navigate a dangerous world filled with monsters, aliens, a deranged artificial intelligence, and hostile survivors—all while the apocalypse is broadcast for entertainment.
The official show synopsis reads: "An alien invasion has wiped out most of humanity and any survivors are forced to fight for their lives on a sadistic intergalactic game show. Sounds bad, right? Now try doing it with bare feet and a stuck-up, self-centered, tiara-wearing talking cat as your partner. Welcome to Dungeon Crawler World: Earth, where the apocalypse will be televised... and Coast Guard vet Carl finds himself stuck with his ex-girlfriend's award-winning show cat, Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk, as they try to survive the end of the world, fighting monsters, aliens, an insane A.I. and even other survivors... all for the sake of good TV. Survival is optional. Entertainment is not."
To date, the Dungeon Crawler Carl literary series comprises seven books, with an eighth installment scheduled for release on May 12. Matt Dinniman has revealed plans to expand the saga to a total of ten books, giving ample source material for the television adaptation to explore over multiple seasons.
This upcoming series marks a notable expansion of Seth MacFarlane’s portfolio into live-action genre television, blending his comedic sensibilities with a science fiction narrative. As the project moves forward on Peacock, fans of the books and newcomers alike will be watching eagerly to see how this unique story translates to the screen.
