AceShowbiz - Tameka "Tiny" Harris recently shared a poignant story about an encounter with The Notorious B.I.G. just minutes before his tragic death in 1997.
The tale dates back to a period when The Notorious B.I.G. publicly dissed the R&B group XSCAPE on his 1994 promotional single, "Just Playing (Dreams)." The insult was so sharp that it became infamous, targeting the group’s appearance in a way that left XSCAPE deeply offended.
Despite the harsh diss, the members of XSCAPE initially chose to ignore the slight, often dismissing it with frustration but without direct confrontation. However, when The Notorious B.I.G. attended their shows in the same cities, tensions rose. Producer Jermaine Dupri attempted to mediate peace between the two parties, but the group was resolute in their rejection.
Tiny recalled their firm stance: “No, he can't bring his ass in here. He can't come in here.” The group made it clear that The Notorious B.I.G. was unwelcome, and the feud remained unresolved for years.
Everything shifted at a 1997 Soul Train Awards afterparty. There, The Notorious B.I.G. approached Tiny and Kandi Burruss to apologize personally for the disrespectful remarks. According to Tiny, he was humble and sincere, expressing regret for his previous behavior.
He told them, “I don't know what I was thinking. Look, I'm ugly as hell. Y'all is beautiful, and I just wanted to say I apologize.” This apology marked the first time XSCAPE heard an authentic acknowledgment of the insult from The Notorious B.I.G., showing a genuine attempt to make amends.
Remarkably, Tiny revealed that this heartfelt moment occurred just 20 to 30 minutes before The Notorious B.I.G. was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles during the early hours of March 9, 1997. He was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center but was pronounced dead shortly thereafter at age 24.
This brief reconciliation remains one of the final personal interactions The Notorious B.I.G. had with the group he had once disrespected so publicly, adding a bittersweet note to the legacy of both the rapper and XSCAPE.
