AceShowbiz - J. Cole recently opened up about his decision to step away from the intense Hip-Hop battle involving Kendrick Lamar and Drake that dominated the culture two years ago. Speaking from his childhood home in Fayetteville, North Carolina, the Dreamville founder shared his conflicted feelings and the lessons he gained during that period.
In a candid interview with Apple Music, J. Cole expressed his deep respect for both artists, emphasizing his discomfort with the divisiveness the feud created. "I admire these dudes, I got genuine love for these dudes," he said, noting how it felt wrong to support negativity aimed at either one. This highlights the tension he felt between loyalty and the external pressure to choose a side in Hip-Hop’s biggest showdown.
J. Cole initially entered the conflict with the release of “7 Minute Drill” in April 2024, a diss track directed at Kendrick Lamar. This response came after Kendrick took aim at both Drake and Cole during his verse on the song “Like That.” The North Carolina rapper found himself in a difficult position, but his participation was brief.
Just two days after dropping the track, J. Cole made a surprising move at the Dreamville Festival in April 2024: he publicly apologized to Kendrick Lamar. Reflecting on that moment, he revealed, "It hit me an hour before my set. Before that, I was stressing the f### out. The moment the idea came to me, I lifted."
J. Cole admitted he felt he had misrepresented himself by fueling division and negative stories about someone he truly respects. He explained, "I felt like I misrepresented myself. I'm giving life to division and to negative storylines and negative perceptions on somebody that I f### with and got love for."
The weight of the situation was apparent to his wife, who recognized how much it affected him. Following his apology, J. Cole took the step to remove “7 Minute Drill” from all streaming platforms, signaling his desire to move past the conflict.
Since then, J. Cole has found peace with his choice to withdraw from the battle, despite its significance in Hip-Hop history. He is now focused on his upcoming album The Fall-Off, leaving behind the division to concentrate on his music and growth.
