AceShowbiz - After an 18-year hiatus, Gnarls Barkley makes a highly anticipated comeback with the release of their third and final studio album, Atlanta, available now through 10k/Atlantic Records.
The Grammy Award-winning duo, consisting of the soulful vocalist CeeLo Green and acclaimed producer Danger Mouse, reunites for this project, which follows their 2008 album The Odd Couple. Atlanta represents both a fresh start and a definitive closing chapter for the collaboration between these two artists.
Produced by Danger Mouse and co-written alongside CeeLo Green, Atlanta features 13 tracks, including the previously released single "Pictures." The album defies easy classification, blending gospel influences with sharp R&B production, while incorporating elements of pop, hip-hop, and timeless musical styles.
Gnarls Barkley first burst onto the scene with their 2006 debut, St. Elsewhere, which included the smash hit "Crazy." That single reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and dominated the official U.K. Singles Chart for nine consecutive weeks. The album itself climbed to No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and secured the top spot on the Official U.K. Albums Chart.
Their sophomore effort, The Odd Couple, peaked at No. 12 on the U.S. all-genre albums chart and produced the single "Going On," which reached No. 88 on the national singles chart.
According to the announcement surrounding their return, Gnarls Barkley, who both hail from Atlanta, had long planned to create a third album. However, "life and other creative pursuits intervened," delaying the project until the duo reunited last year to dedicate time to record this final installment.
During the hiatus, CeeLo Green remained active with four solo albums, including the 2010 release The Lady Killer, featuring the hit "Forget You" (also known in its uncensored form as "F*** You"). He also released two albums with his hip-hop group Goodie Mob and served as a judge on the television show The Voice.
Meanwhile, Danger Mouse (born Brian Joseph Burton) continued his prolific production work, contributing to albums by Beck, Sparklehorse, U2, the Black Keys, Norah Jones, Portugal. The Man, A$AP Rocky, and others. He also put out three albums as part of the collaboration Broken Bells with James Mercer of The Shins.
"Life is a movie. Thoughts are theater, emotions are entertainment, and songs are cinema," reflects CeeLo Green on their latest offering. "Gnarls is the narrator... a noun even a person, place, and thing with main character energy to match. Welcome to Atlanta. Smile for the pictures."
Gnarls Barkley’s Atlanta is now available to stream, marking a significant moment as both a reunion and farewell from the iconic duo.
