AceShowbiz - LaRussell, a rising star in the rap scene, is witnessing the rewards of his hard work nearly a decade into his career. This Bay Area artist has carved a niche for himself as an independent force, which has drawn the attention of industry legends, including Jay-Z.
Last month, LaRussell had a significant meeting at Roc Nation's headquarters in Los Angeles, leading to a collaboration with the renowned label. At 31 years old, he signed a deal with Roc Nation Distribution while maintaining ownership of his masters. This deal has reignited a long-standing debate on social media concerning the value of a record deal versus financial offers.
LaRussell expressed his thoughts on the new mentorship he’s found in Jay-Z, saying, “I got to a point in my journey where I’m the first in my lineage to do a lot of these things, so I no longer have a guide. And Hov is who is now another guide for me that I could look to and say, ‘Hey, man, how did you navigate this?'”
Opportunities are rapidly unfolding for LaRussell, particularly with the NFL recognizing his impact. He will be curating the house band for Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium and is scheduled to perform on Super Bowl Sunday (February 8) at the Tailgate event alongside headliner Teddy Swims.
Inspired by the late Nipsey Hussle, who pioneered the $100 mixtape model, LaRussell aims to sell 100,000 copies of his upcoming album, Something’s in the Water. Initially delayed until March due to a shortfall in his financial targets, his “pay what you want” pricing strategy allows fans to gain early access for as little as one dollar through the EVEN platform.
Support from fellow artists has been remarkable, with several celebrities making substantial contributions. Notably, NBA star Kyrie Irving purchased a copy for $11,001, while Snoop Dogg, E-40, and Raphael Saadiq also made generous purchases ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.
“Shout-out [Nipsey Hussle]. He did the $100 album. And this was my way of just giving a nod to Nip, but opening the door for more people to have access,” LaRussell added. “It’s been really dope to see, especially the artistic community, because you don’t often see artists supporting artists in this fashion.”
