AceShowbiz - Kevin Parker has made significant waves not just in music, but also in the electronic instrument market. Following his recent Grammy win for best dance/electronic recording, exciting news has surfaced about the success of his innovative synth, Orchid.
Co-created by Kevin Parker, Orchid has quickly established itself as a go-to synthesizer for musicians and producers eager to explore new creative avenues. In its inaugural year, the synth racked up an impressive A$12 million (approximately $8.4 million) in sales, as reported by Charl Laubscher, the CEO and co-founder of Telepathic Instruments, the Australian startup behind the product.
The first batch of 1,000 Orchids hit the market in December 2024 at a retail price of about $549 and sold out in just three minutes. Over the course of its first full year, over 10,000 units have been sold across 60 different countries. Notable artists including Kid Cudi, Travis Scott, Fred Again, Benny Blanco, Dua Lipa, Don Toliver, and Janelle Monáe have all embraced its unique features.
The Orchid synthesizer, designed by Ignacio Germade, primarily functions as a chord-generating system, allowing users to bypass conventional keyboard playing limitations. Musicians can choose a root note from its single-octave keyboard and utilize eight chord-type selection and modification keys to create chords effortlessly.
For instance, pressing the “E” key alongside the “Minor” chord modifier will yield an E minor chord, which can then be further adjusted. A patent is currently pending for a crucial component of its “chord logic system,” and Telepathic Instruments is set to unveil a major update in April.
Interestingly, Laubscher notes that the success of Orchid has come without any paid endorsements or sponsorship deals. “Orchid has spread through the music industry the old-fashioned way, passed from artist to artist, studio to studio because it’s a product artists actually love working with,” he stated.
On February 1, Kevin Parker won a Grammy for “End of Summer,” the leading track from Tame Impala’s fifth album, Deadbeat. The song peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, just shy of the No. 3 peak achieved by the album’s predecessor, The Slow Rush. Deadbeat dominated six Billboard charts and placed three songs on the Billboard Hot 100.
This marked the first Grammy win for Tame Impala as a solo act, following the group’s previous win for their collaborative track “Neverender” with Justice in the same category last year. As Kevin Parker continues to innovate musically and technologically, fans eagerly await what he will create next.
