AceShowbiz - After nearly two decades of speculation, Sam Raimi has finally cleared the air regarding the villain casting for Spider-Man 4. Following his successful trilogy featuring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, plans for a fourth installment were halted due to creative differences and delays, ultimately leading to Raimi stepping away from the project. Before Sony rebooted the franchise with Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man, rumors circulated that Rachel McAdams was in discussions to portray Black Cat as a villain. However, she promptly denied these claims.
In a recent interview with CinemaBlend while promoting his new film Send Help, which features McAdams, Raimi was asked about the casting rumors. He confirmed that there were no talks involving McAdams for the role of a female villain in Spider-Man 4. He stated, “We never had auditions for a female villain that I'm aware of. Look, I talked to John Malkovich about playing the Vulture, and he was wonderful, and we got along great. But the movie never went.” This revelation comes as a significant insight for fans who have been curious about the film's development.
This clarification follows Raimi's previous comments in an update for ScreenRant, where he expressed that it wouldn't feel appropriate for him to revisit the narrative of Spider-Man 4. He mentioned, “I handed the torch off to someone else. And I think they’ve got to keep running with the storyline and the audience that is now following the torchbearer.” It’s evident that Raimi respects the new direction the franchise has taken.
While Raimi may have moved on from directing Spider-Man films, he did return to the superhero genre in 2022 with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. When Scott Derrickson stepped down from the project, Raimi was brought in to direct, allowing him to re-enter the Marvel universe. Coincidentally, McAdams also starred in this sequel, reprising her role as Dr. Christine Palmer from the original Doctor Strange film. Additionally, she voiced the character in an episode of the animated series What If...?
Despite Raimi's departure, fans remain hopeful that they haven't seen the last of Maguire's Spider-Man. He, alongside Andrew Garfield, made a memorable return in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, reigniting excitement for the beloved character.
