AceShowbiz - Belén is a powerful narrative that emphasizes the strength of women united, brought to life by writer-director and star Dolores Fonzi. This film, adapted from Ana Correa's book Somos Belén (We Are Belén), portrays the gripping true story of a young Argentinian woman, played by Camila Plaate, who is admitted to a hospital with severe abdominal pain without realizing she is pregnant. Following a tragic miscarriage, she faces arrest for allegedly inducing an illegal abortion, a charge that results in a two-year detention and an eight-year prison sentence.
This unjust sentence ignites a nationwide outcry from women, leading to Soledad Deza (played by Fonzi), a determined female lawyer, taking on the case. With the backing of numerous women and organizations, she relentlessly fights for the young woman’s freedom. This movement ultimately contributes to the Argentinian government's decision to legalize abortion in 2020.
During a recent screening series hosted by Deadline at The London West Hollywood, Fonzi shared her motivations for adapting this significant narrative. In one poignant scene from the film, Soledad appears on a talk show to discuss her client’s plight, only to be dismissed by an anti-abortion commentator who likens women carrying babies to breeding puppies. Fonzi revealed that this comparison was inspired by an actual statement made by an Argentinian senator.
“The moment that radicalized me was similar to the scene with the TV show host in the film. To hear a female senator compare women to puppies because she opposes the law was crucial in illustrating our struggle for abortion rights,†Fonzi explained. She emphasized the importance of conveying the challenges faced during the period leading to the law's passage, expressing her determination to approach the subject without fear. “It was vital for me to share the experiences we endured during those years, as many of us activist actresses were deeply engaged with our country’s reality. While the movie tells a real story, it also reflects our lives as women in Argentina.â€
Actor Julieta Cardinali, who portrays Beatriz Camaño, another lawyer in the film, expressed enthusiasm about the film being selected as Argentina's official entry for the 2026 Oscars. She noted, “The reception of this film is especially significant in today's world, given current events. Discussing these topics is incredibly important.â€
Fonzi remarked on the challenges of transforming this story into a cinematic experience, stating, “Creating this film was a tribute to the women’s movement. While representing Argentina at the Oscars is important, the message of the film is what truly matters.†The journey of Belén extends beyond the screen, resonating with audiences and fueling ongoing discussions about women's rights.
