AceShowbiz - The latest box office figures reveal a mixed bag for Tron: Ares, the highly anticipated new installment in the iconic sci-fi franchise. Following its early October release, the film debuted with a disappointing $33 million, falling short of its $40 million projection and well below the 2010 hit, Tron: Legacy. Despite this slow start, Tron: Ares is now projected to reach $63.1 million domestically after three weeks in theaters. This comes despite a significant 58% drop from the previous week, adding $4.5 million from 2,940 screens. Notably, this performance is enough for Tron: Ares to surpass one of Disney's past box office disappointments, 1999's musical anthology Fantasia 2000, which garnered $60 million domestically.
This modest climb sees Tron: Ares positioned at #231 on Disney's domestic highest-grossing charts. It lands just shy of Nicolas Cage's The Sorcerer's Apprentice, which made $63.15 million, but comfortably ahead of Miley Cyrus' The Last Song, which earned $62.9 million. However, the financial outlook remains challenging. With an estimated budget ranging from $180 million to $220 million, reports suggest that Tron: Ares could face losses upwards of $132 million at the box office. While the third installment has managed to outpace the original 1982 film, Tron ($33 million), it appears highly unlikely to reach the impressive global total of Tron: Legacy, which soared to $409 million.
The underwhelming commercial performance of Tron: Ares arrives at a particularly challenging time for Disney, which has experienced a year of fluctuating box office fortunes. While the Lilo & Stitch remake stood out as a rare billion-dollar success, this achievement has been overshadowed by the lackluster returns of other major releases such as Snow White, Thunderbolts*, and Fantastic Four: First Steps. This contrasts sharply with competitor Warner Bros., which has celebrated a record-breaking streak, seeing seven of its movies surpass the $40 million mark. Directed by Joachim Rønning, Tron: Ares boasts an ensemble cast including Oscar-winner Jared Leto, Greta Lee, and Hasan Minhaj, with Jeff Bridges also reprising his role.
Critically, Tron: Ares received mixed reviews, reflected in its 53% Rotten Tomatoes score. Critics often pointed to Leto's performance and a perceived lackluster storytelling as weaknesses. Nevertheless, the film's visual effects and musical score were frequently highlighted as its more redeeming qualities. In contrast to the critical division, audience reception has generally been more welcoming to the new installment, suggesting a different sentiment among viewers.
