This stringent expectation wasn't always the norm. During Hollywood's golden studio era, accents served less as geographical markers and more as shorthand for character archetypes. An unspoken "accent code" dictated roles: English accents often signified authority or villainy, exemplified by numerous James Bond nemeses. American accents conveyed authenticity; stars like John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, and Sally Field built trust by sounding ordinary, local, and inherently "real." The advent of streaming platforms like Netflix fundamentally reshaped this landscape, ushering in an era of audience globalization. Viewers worldwide gained unprecedented access to diverse productions from Seoul, Madrid, Mumbai, and Copenhagen. Shows like Squid Game, Money Heist, Blood Sisters, Sacred Games, Borgen, and Roma became global phenomena, often subtitled or dubbed, succeeding not despite their local sounds but precisely because of them.
