What could have been a celebratory moment quickly devolved into a flurry of contentious comments, including a tweet from fast food giant Wendy's.
"Katy Perry has returned from space," read one of the tweets about the flight. Wendy's was quick to offer a tongue-in-cheek response, "Can we send her back," before adding a further provocative jab by parodying the singer's lyrics, "I kissed the ground and I liked it."
That alone would have been enough to spark chatter online, but the drama caught fire when singer Ke$ha seemingly jumped into the fray. The "TikTok" hitmaker entered the chat by posting a selfie with a Wendy's cup. While Kesha didn't add a caption, many saw it as a subtle dig at Katy.
People believed Kesha's actions are rooted in deeper issues between the two, primarily revolving around their history with producer Dr. Luke. While Kesha has a contentious past with the producer, Katy is quite the opposite.
Back in 2014, Kesha accused Dr. Luke of numerous abuses, claims that led to a legal battle. Meanwhile, Katy reunited with Dr. Luke for her latest album "143", which didn't sit well with Kesha's fans although Kesha herself never made any comment on the matter.
The space mission itself, marking the first all-female flight crew since 1963, included high-profile figures like Gayle King, Lauren Sanchez, and NASA scientist Aisha Bowe. However, this didn't shield them from criticism. Celebrities like Emily Ratajkowski, Olivia Wilde, Amy Schumer, and Olivia Munn voiced their disdain, with Munn calling the trip "gluttonous."
However, Gayle King and Lauren Sanchez are steadfast in defending the mission. Gayle King claimed this space tourism could help explore ways to tackle Earth's waste problem by looking towards outer space solutions.
