Iain revealed that his grandfather, Richard L. Armitage, had passed away, leaving a void in his heart. "I am heartbroken to share with you that my extraordinary grandfather died on Sunday. He was my hero and I adored him," wrote Armitage.
The late Richard Armitage, who would have turned 80 on April 26, was not only a family hero but also a national figure with significant contributions to his name.
One of Richard's notable achievements was his heroic efforts during the Vietnam War in 1973, where he played a crucial role in evacuating over 30,000 people from South Vietnam. His service didn't stop there; Richard was the Deputy Secretary of State under Colin Powell during President George W. Bush's first term.
"I don't even know how to begin to tell you about my grandfather, but one of his most significant achievements was helping to save the lives of over 30,000 people when evacuating South Vietnam in 1973," Iain shared.
Richard's life was filled with the love of his large family. "He was the father of eight and the grandfather of 13," Iain noted, adding that his grandfather had diverse interests from basketball to the United States Naval Academy.
In a surprising twist, Iain humorously mentioned that Richard was also a fan of Taylor Swift. "I think he knew everything. I am endlessly proud to be his grandson, and I'm glad he knew it. I already miss your terrible jokes and I will miss and love you forever, Dad A," gushed the young actor.
Fans and followers quickly offered their condolences and words of comfort. "Losing a grandparent can be so tough. Sending love and strength ❤️," commented one follower. Another added, "My heart goes out to you, Iain. Take all the time you need to heal, my love."
