AceShowbiz - Aimee Lou Wood, 31, clarified her criticism of "Saturday Night Live". While she slammed the sketch show for its "mean and unfunny" impersonation in "The White Lotus" parody, she didn't blame Sarah Sherman, the comedian who imitated her in the skit.
In a follow-up message on Instagram Story, the British actress claimed that the whole debacle was "not @sarahsquirm 's fault." She added, "Not hating on her, hating on the concept."
While she did have issue with the "SNL" take on her, Wood insisted she's not overly sensitive. "I actually love being taken the piss out of when it's clever and in good spirits," she said before further explaining why she was not impressed by the skit, "The joke was about fluoride. I have big gap teeth not bad teeth.
Wood further elaborated on her perspective, "I don't mind caricature - I understand that's what SNL is." She felt like she was unfairly targeted compared to others depicted in the skit, "The rest of the skit was punching up and I/Chelsea was the only one punched down on."
She even shared a fan's comment that resonated with her viewpoint. "It was a sharp and funny skit until it suddenly took a screeching turn into 1970's misogyny," it read. She screenshot and captioned it with, "This sums up my view."
The controversial sketch, also featuring Jon Hamm, Mikey Day, James Austin Johnson, Chloe Fineman, and Scarlett Johansson, and garnered over 3 million views on YouTube. Yet, Wood's criticisms highlighted a sore spot, especially given her past experiences with public scrutiny of her appearance.
Following her outcry, several celebrities, including Cara Delevingne, Georgia May Jagger, and Jameela Jamil, showed support for Wood's stance. Moreover, Wood revealed that "SNL" had privately reached out to apologize shortly after her initial posts although a representative for the show did not issue any public statement.
