AceShowbiz - Will Smith announced that his first full-length album in 20 years, "Based on a True Story," will be released on Friday, March 28. Smith shared the news on Instagram, accompanied by the album cover and release date, stating, "Been working on this project for a minute and I'm itchin' to get it out to y'all."
The 14-track album features a variety of collaborators, including his son Jaden Smith, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Teyana Taylor, and Jac Ross. Smith's previously released singles "Beautiful Scars," "Work of Art," "Tantrum," and "You Can Make It" will also be part of the album.
He also collaborated with Big Sean on "Beautiful Scars" featuring Obanga. The music video for this track garnered significant attention online, showcasing Smith in a Neo-like role from "The Matrix", a role which he famously turned down.
Reflecting on his decision to return to music after more than 20 years, Smith told Billboard in January, "A well opened up inside of me, a well of understanding of art and pain... all kinds of things that I didn't even know were in there."
He mentioned that this introspection was fueled further after the Oscars where he infamously slapped host Chris Rock for mocking Jada Pinkett Smith, leading to a spiritual awakening and a renewed desire to express himself through music.
Smith has hinted that "Based on a True Story" is just the beginning, as he plans to release three albums under the same banner. He described these as "three seasons of a TV musical show."
