AceShowbiz - Will Smith returns to music with a forthcoming album, "Based on a True Story," and a new single, "Beautiful Scars," that confronts his past and draws inspiration from the iconic movie "The Matrix."
On Thursday, January 30, Smith announced his first album in over 20 years. The album will feature previously released singles "You Can Make It," "Work of Art," and "TANTRUM" featuring Joyner Lucas.
Alongside the album announcement, Smith debuted "Beautiful Scars," a collaboration with Big Sean featuring Obanga. The music video for "Beautiful Scars" takes inspiration from "The Matrix" franchise, featuring Smith as Neo, the role he famously turned down to star in "Wild Wild West."
In the video, Big Sean plays the role of Morpheus, offering Smith two choices: a blue pill to return to his current life or a red pill to go back and star in "The Matrix." Smith humorously chooses both pills, resulting in a series of action-packed scenes that reflect his regrets and struggles.
The song "Beautiful Scars" addresses the pains of fame and the importance of learning from mistakes. In the lyrics, Smith raps, "I rebuild with the broken pieces that are shattered on the floor / I am healed by the deepest teachings that were given by remorse."
The "Beautiful Scars" video also includes a reference to Smith's infamous 2022 Oscars slap incident involving host Chris Rock. Big Sean references the event, saying, "There's only one you truly regret... Well, maybe two. But we're not gonna focus on that one."
