AceShowbiz - Selena Gomez has responded to a Republican Senate candidate who called for her deportation after she tearfully declared support for the people arrested in President Donald Trump's recent immigration crackdown.
Following Gomez's tearful video on Instagram where she shared her concern for undocumented people, Sam Parker, a 2018 Senate candidate from Utah, wrote on X, "Deport Selena Gomez."
In response, Gomez sarcastically wrote on her Instagram Stories, "Oh, Mr. Parker, Mr. Parker. Thanks for the laugh and the threat."
Gomez's video captured her emotional reaction to the mass deportations that have been taking place in the U.S. since Trump took office. "All my people are getting attacked, the children," she said. "I don't understand. I'm so sorry, I wish I could do something, but I can't. I don't know what to do. I'll try everything, I promise."
Gomez herself is a descendant of undocumented Mexican immigrants who later gained citizenship. In a Time magazine essay, Gomez shared her family's immigration journey and expressed her concerns about the plight of undocumented immigrants.
Reacting to the controversy, Gomez's supporters praised her for speaking out against Trump's inhumane immigration policies. Critics, on the other hand, supported Parker's call for deportation, arguing that Gomez had shown sympathy for criminals.
Polls indicate that a majority of Americans support deporting migrants who have committed violent crimes but are divided on issues like family separation and birthright citizenship.
