AceShowbiz - Kristin Cavallari isn't holding back about the complexities of her marriage to Jay Cutler and the emotional journey that followed their split. Speaking candidly on multiple platforms, the "Laguna Beach" alum sheds light on the underlying issues that plagued their relationship and the personal growth she has experienced since their 2020 divorce.
On Bunnie XO's "Dumb Blonde" podcast, Cavallari, who was married to former NFL player Jay Cutler from 2013 to 2020, revealed how her troubled relationship with her father influenced her marriage.
"So, the thing is, I was repeating a pattern with my dad," Cavallari, 37, acknowledged. "And because I hadn't done the work on my relationship with my dad - that's what you do, you know? I ended up marrying my dad."
She described their marriage as "toxic," attributing much of their difficulties to her lack of self-awareness and unresolved personal issues at the time. "Things were just never good and we tried, we really did... We really did everything that we could," she admitted.
Even after their divorce, she still went on dates with her ex-husband to see if she could salvage their relationship. "I would go back [to Cutler] a couple times and be like, 'I know it's not right, but, like, why am I doing it?' " she remembered.
Cavallari's journey post-divorce has been a tumultuous one, filled with introspection and self-improvement. In an emotionally raw episode of her own podcast "Let's Be Honest", she reflected on the heartbreak that permeated her marriage. "Even though I'm the one that walked away, it was not what I wanted. It was not what I had envisioned... My heart was broken for years in my marriage," she confessed.
The couple, who share three children, even attempted to rekindle their relationship by dating briefly after their divorce. Cavallari explained the difficulty of breaking free from what she termed a "trauma bond." Eventually, though, she found the strength to move on. "Then I really did the work," she asserted.
Appearing on Kaitlyn Bristowe's "Off the Vine" podcast, Cavallari elaborated on the emotional rollercoaster of life after divorce. "It's been the brightest and the saddest, the whole experience," she said. Reflecting on their short-lived reconciliation, she noted, "Jay and I actually went on a couple dates... but that same connection wasn't there anymore."
Despite the challenges, Cavallari is optimistic about the future. She emphasized the importance of personal growth and breaking toxic patterns. "I have really taken the time to get my s*** together," she affirmed, vowing to avoid repeating past mistakes in future relationships.
Now, after four years, Cavallari and Cutler have reached an amicable place for the sake of their children. "It makes me so happy," she said, hopeful that their improved relationship will create a positive environment for their kids.
