As James Gunn and Peter Safran step in to overhaul the struggling DC film universe, all eyes are on Gunn's Superman reboot to revive the brand from its string of failures and the immense pressure took a toll on the director.

AceShowbiz - The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) has always been a rollercoaster of hits and misses, experiencing a significant decline after the flop of 2022's "Black Adam". Despite Blue Beetle's attempt at redemption, the damage was palpable, leaving fans skeptical about the franchise's future. This was the landscape James Gunn and Peter Safran inherited at the start of 2023 when they were appointed co-CEOs of DC Studios.

Gunn and Safran immediately got to work, unveiling a new slate of interconnected film and TV projects under the rebranded DC Universe (DCU). However, the fate of this fresh start seems precariously hinged on one crucial project: Gunn's upcoming Superman film. Scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, this film carries the weight of reviving not just Superman as a box office draw but the entire DCU.

In a revealing interview with io9, Gunn admitted that the pressure has been overwhelming, "I'm miserable. Really, I'm miserable. But hopefully, it's for the greater good." This "greater good" refers to the DCU's very survival, hinging on Superman's success. While there's a plan for projects like "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow", "Peacemaker" season 2, and "Lanterns", their futures are uncertain if Superman doesn't soar.

"A lot [is riding on Superman]," Gunn acknowledged. "I mean, we're not going to just keep making movies." This underscores the high stakes; Superman must fight uphill to reclaim his cinematic glory, tainted by past films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

The situation is further complicated by intense competition. With Gunn's "Superman" reboot slated between Marvel's highly anticipated "Fantastic Four" and Universal's next "Jurassic World" installment, capturing audience attention is a formidable task.

However, Gunn is placing his bets on the chemistry of his lead actors, David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Speaking to ScreenRant, Gunn revealed his confidence in their casting, "On the first day, I saw [David] Corenswet and Rachel's tape, and I went, 'Oh my God, we're going to be okay.' "

Despite his admitted misery, Gunn's passion for storytelling could be the key to the DCU's revival. He has gone to great lengths to ensure the right mix, even testing various actor pairings to find the "magic." The upcoming Superman film aims to blend epic action with humor and heart, portraying a hero driven by compassion and inherent goodness.

The question remains: Can Superman rise to the occasion and carry the DCU on his shoulders? If not, Gunn's ambitious plans may crumble before they even begin.
