Filmmaker David Ayer faces backlash after showing love and excitement for James Gunn's new 'Superman' project but he stands by his decision to support the new DC universe.

AceShowbiz - David Ayer, the director of the 2016 film "Suicide Squad" from the abandoned DCEU, recently took a firm stand on social media, expressing his support for fellow filmmaker James Gunn and the new "Superman" project Gunn is spearheading.

Ayer's show of solidarity came just days before the release of the highly anticipated Superman trailer, prompting him to ask his followers to pause their campaign to release his cut of "Suicide Squad" to avoid clashing with the launch of Gunn's DC Universe projects, including "Creature Commandos".

"I didn't realize James was dropping Creature Commandos when the last Ayer cut campaign hit"” Ayer posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, on December 17. He continued, "The new Superman trailer is dropping soon and I know there are intentions of another campaign for my version of Skwad."

He then advised fans to "stay far clear of Thursday for any campaigning," to prevent overshadowing the Superman trailer release. Ayer emphasized that his primary goal was to support other filmmakers, expressing excitement for the upcoming trailer, saying he had heard through the grapevine that it was "pretty incredible."

Ayer's plea for consideration was met with some backlash, prompting him to return to the platform to address the criticism. "My Lord. If supporting another filmmaker is so contentious, I'm just lost at this point," he posted.

Ayer revealed a personal connection to superhero stories, sharing that they were a source of solace during his difficult childhood. "Batman spoke to my injured soul. Superman's optimism was an example of how to see the world without darkness," he shared. Ayer reiterated his excitement for Gunn's work, stating, "Real talk. And I cannot wait to see his film."

Despite the backlash, Ayer defiantly stood by his support for Gunn, stating, "I do troll what I can control. And can't what I can't. Gonna step back from all this for a moment." His comments left some questions unanswered, as he did not specify whether he was stepping back from social media or the film industry entirely. Nevertheless, Ayer continued to engage on X, sharing posts related to the topic.

Reflecting on his own project, Ayer disclosed that he had spoken with DC Studios co-head James Gunn about the potential release of his version of Suicide Squad. "The interest in my cut being shown seems real and organic. And Gunn told me it would have its time to be shared," Ayer noted in August 2023.

Recognizing Gunn's efforts to launch the new DC universe, Ayer acknowledged, "He absolutely deserves to launch his DC Universe without more drama about old projects."

As fans eagerly wait for more news, Ayer teased in a December 2023 interview with Total Film that his cut of "Suicide Squad" is indeed on the horizon, saying, "It's coming. Something's going to happen. Something's going to be revealed. The truth always comes out. It always comes out."
