British actor Paapa Essiedu is reportedly being considered for the coveted role of Professor Severus Snape on HBO's upcoming 'Harry Potter' television series.

AceShowbiz - HBO is reportedly eyeing British actor Paapa Essiedu to portray the iconic character of Professor Severus Snape on its upcoming "Harry Potter" TV series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Essiedu has been offered the part, though the terms of the deal are still under negotiation.

Snape, the half-blood wizard and Head of Slytherin House at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, played a pivotal role in the original "Harry Potter" film series, portrayed by the late Alan Rickman. On the television adaptation, Snape is expected to feature heavily in the first season, based on J.K. Rowling's novel "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone".

No official casting announcements have been made for the series, but it is expected to feature a diverse cast. Essiedu's involvement would align with HBO's commitment to inclusive casting, and potentially lead to a fresh interpretation of the character.

Essiedu is a BAFTA and Emmy-nominated actor known for his roles in "I May Destroy You", "Gangs of London" and "The Lazarus Project". He has also appeared in films such as "Murder on the Orient Express" and "The Outrun".

The "Harry Potter" series is being written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner. Mark Mylod will direct multiple episodes and serve as an executive producer. The show is an HBO production in association with Bronte Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and David Heyman are also executive producers.

The series is described as a "faithful adaptation" of Rowling's beloved book series and is set to feature a new cast of characters to lead a new generation of fans.
