On Saturday, November 30, Shiffrin, 29, crashed into a fence during a World Cup giant slalom race in Killington, Vermont. The incident occurred on her second run, just before the finish line. According to U.S. Ski & Snowboard, Shiffrin hit a gate and flipped over before sliding into another gate.

Medical personnel transported Shiffrin via sled and ambulance to Rutland Regional Medical Center. An examination revealed a puncture wound on the right side of her abdomen and severe muscle trauma. However, she had no ligament damage, and her bones and internal organs appeared normal.

Shiffrin gave an update on her condition via Instagram, saying she was "not really too much cause for concern" but was unable to move due to an abrasion and a sharp object that had stabbed her. She apologized for causing alarm and thanked her supporters for their concern.

Shiffrin's crash occurred as she was pursuing her 100th World Cup win, which would have marked a milestone in her illustrious career. She had taken the lead in the event before the incident. It is unclear whether she will be able to compete in her scheduled race in Beaver Creek, Colorado in two weeks.

Shiffrin has a history of injuries, including a high-speed crash in Italy in January that resulted in sprained knee ligaments. Despite the setback, she ultimately expressed gratitude for escaping more serious harm.
