AceShowbiz - On the set of the 2007 film "American Gangster," Josh Brolin nearly got into a physical altercation with Denzel Washington. During an appearance on the "In Depth with Graham Bansinger" podcast, Brolin shared details of their tense encounter, which stemmed from a disagreement over lines.
Brolin, who played a detective in the film, forgot a line in a scene with Washington, who portrayed drug kingpin Frank Lucas. When he put his hand on Washington's shoulder to ask for help, Washington abruptly hit his hand away, saying, "Don't ever f***ing put your hand on me."
Brolin recalled, "I was like, 'Holy s***, I'm gonna scrap with Denzel Washington. This is crazy.' " In the moment, he perceived Washington as being deeply immersed in character, fully embodying the persona of Frank Lucas.
Despite the initial tension, the situation de-escalated when Brolin asked Washington if he was okay, and they continued filming. Brolin believes that Washington's behavior was likely due to him staying in character. "In his mind, he was just doing his job," Brolin explained. "He was that guy. He was Frank Lucas, period."
Brolin and Washington have since reconciled, and they maintain a friendly relationship. Nearly a year after the incident, they encountered each other at an event, and Washington greeted Brolin warmly, indicating that there were no lingering hard feelings.
