AceShowbiz - In a touching and powerful revelation, "Star Wars" actress Kelly Marie Tran has publicly come out as queer. Her decision to share her truth was deeply influenced by her new role in the upcoming remake of Ang Lee's 1993 film, "The Wedding Banquet."
Marie Tran, speaking to Vanity Fair about the project, candidly shared, "I haven't said this publicly yet, but I'm a queer person." Tran, previously known for her role as Rose Tico in the "Star Wars" sequel series, explained that her involvement with the queer rom-com inspired her to open up about her identity.
The remake, directed by queer filmmaker Andrew Ahn, stars Tran as Angela, a woman attempting to conceive a child through in vitro fertilization (IVF) with her girlfriend Lee, portrayed by Academy Award-nominated actress Lily Gladstone. They share their home with best friends Chris (Bowen Yang) and Min (Han Gi-chan).
The plot thickens as Min, under familial pressure to return to Korea and take over the family business, devises a plan with Angela to fake a wedding. This ruse is intended to help Min secure a green card and enable Angela to gather funds for her IVF treatment while appeasing Min's conservative family back home.
Discussing her role, Tran said, "The thing that really excited me about it was I got to play a person that I felt like I knew. I don't feel like I'm acting at all in this movie." She further expressed the overwhelming acceptance she's felt during the filming process, "I'm here doing this amazing movie with these amazing people. I've never been in a queer space before. I've never truly felt this accepted before."
Kelly Marie Tran's announcement and her role in "The Wedding Banquet" resonate strongly with her previous statements on LGBTQ+ representation. She has been a long-time advocate, even hinting at her belief that her character in Disney's "Raya and the Last Dragon" is queer, climbing out with, "I think it might get me in trouble for saying that, but whatever."
The movie includes other notable names, such as "Minari" Oscar winner Yuh-Jung Youn, who plays Min's grandmother, and Joan Chen, who takes on the role of Angela's mother. Tran drew parallels between her character's coming out journey and her own, saying, "I came out to my mom in a very specific experience. The scenes that I have with Joan Chen in this movie are very similar to the experience that I had."
The original "The Wedding Banquet" focused on a bisexual Taiwanese immigrant and his attempts to balance his life in New York with the expectations of his conservative family. Andrew Ahn's modern take aims to reflect contemporary queer community experiences, setting the story in Seattle and focusing more on the IVF journey of Tran and Gladstone's characters.
Kelly Marie Tran's heartfelt declaration and enthusiastic participation in Ahn's remake is a significant step towards broader and richer LGBTQ+ representation in mainstream cinema. It's a message of authenticity, acceptance, and the importance of feeling seen.
