AceShowbiz - Lily-Rose Depp has defended her decision to star in the HBO series "The Idol", which was canceled after one season due to its explicit content and controversial storylines.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Depp said she "loves" the show and is proud of the work she did.
"I always knew some people were not going to like it and that it was going to be too much for some people," she said. "But I stand by it. We made a choice and we went for it."
"The Idol" followed the story of Jocelyn (Depp), a rising pop star who falls into a complicated relationship with a self-help guru and nightclub owner (The Weeknd). The series received criticism for its overtly explicit sex scenes and nudity.
Depp said she understands that the show wasn't for everyone, but she's glad she got to play Jocelyn.
"She is the woman that I wanted to be when I was five," she said. "I was the little girl who was wearing my mom's heels-she is the femme fatale fantasy of who I wanted to be when I was a kid."
Despite the show's cancellation, Depp said she would have loved to have returned for another season.
"I loved the character profoundly," she said. "I know that we'll do something again together one day, and I'm excited for that day. Everything happens for a reason."
Depp also reflected on the personal growth she experienced while filming the show.
"I learned so much about myself, and I got to progress so much in my own work," she said. "I learned how to dance, and sing, and do all these things that I had never done before. It was a real growing period for me."
The controversy surrounding "The Idol" began shortly after it was announced in 2021. After it was greenlit, the storyline and showrunners changed, the premiere was pushed back, and a Rolling Stone report alleged that people who signed up for one project ended up working on something else-that was too controversial.
However, Depp and the rest of the series' stars said they knew what to expect and were ready for whatever people had to say.
"We knew what we were doing, intentionally touching on things that were supposed to be shocking, and crazy, and of its own world," Depp said. "So when people were like, 'This is so crazy,' we were like, 'Ha ha ha. It is super crazy.' "
