"There's this thing about my sexuality, and people have been talking about it so long," Mendes said, acknowledging its complexity. "I'm trying to be really brave and just allow myself to be a human and feel things."
Mendes has faced speculation about his sexuality for years. In 2018, he dismissed rumors as "hurtful" and expressed frustration over the societal pressure to conform.
"I thought, 'You f**king guys are so lucky I'm not actually gay and terrified of coming out,' " he said. "That's something that kills people."
In 2022, Mendes canceled his international tour due to mental health struggles. He retreated from the spotlight, seeking balance and personal growth. His fifth album, "Shawn," due out on November 15, reflects his experiences during this transformative time. In the album's opening track, he confesses, "I don't understand who I am right now."
